EF JAN 23 - MORE MORE MORE STRIKES ON DEBUT

By Graham Potter | Monday, January 25, 2010

Eagle Farm, January 23, 2010.
Track - Good 2. Rail - out 2.5m.
QTIS 600 2yo Handicap (Colts and geldings) - 1000m. Time: 58.08 (carrying 57kg).
1 More More More; 2 Done All Done 3 Better Option.

The Alan Bailey trained More More More landed an encouraging debut victory when he produced a sustained run in the straight, coming from off the pace, to win going away by 0,75 lengths. The race time of 58.10 was a new class record eclipsing the 58.25 set by Slice And Dice last November.

More More More was tardy away and the gelding was back last after the field had travelled 100m. All that meant was that the experience that jockey Glen Colless brings to race-riding was again going to be showcased and the rider was on top of his game.

Colless let More More More relax. He never chased the gelding at all as he allowed his mount to cross to the rail and settle into a comfortable gallop. Even when he cornered for home some six lengths off the duelling Flash Jester and Done All Done, Colless was not vigourous in the saddle. Instead he allowed More More More to pick up the tempo in his own time and let the horses talent kicked in.

As More More More responded Colless got busier. More More More was still a little more than three lengths back coming through the 200m mark, but he was now homing in on the leaders who he collared inside the final 40m to score in impressive style under a top class ride.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Alan Bailey: “Ah, I think he is quite a nice horse this fella, but we’ve just had to wait a bit. He is a bit backward. He is not a precocious two-year-old. He was a backward horse when I bought him and we’ve had to let him grow. That’s why he never appeared until now. Whether he’ll get there this time or whether we’ll have to give him a break ... whatever he did today he will improve a lot on.

“He probably has to have another break before we see the best of him. That will be ... well, we’ll let him decide that. I take him back home and I’ll just see how he does. He is not that big an eater just yet, but if he comes up good after this ... sometimes it turns, you know, when you give them a run like that.

“If he turns in a couple of weeks I wouldn’t mind bringing him back for a 1200 or something like that and then look at the Winter Carnival. I think he’ll make a nice horse.

“The penny hasn’t dropped with him yet. Glen (Colless) said he just had to get back there to get him on the bit. He was pretty much the same when we trialled him the other day. He wasn’t that quick out. But he picked himself up well. When he started to travel Glen said he felt really good and he hit the line well. Before that he was all over the shop a bit.

“We always thought he’d run a bit of ground, you know, but we didn’t want him to get that far back. I think he’s got a good future. He’s out of a good family with a good pedigree, so he is halfway there.”

Jockey Glen Colless: “He has got the makings of a good horse. At the coast the other day (in a trial) he did much the same. He gets back. He doesn’t know much about it. He has only had one trial and one jump out. I always thought he’d be a seven furlong horse later on.

“Yeah, today he just was steady out. He was happy to go back to the fence and I let him get onto the bridle. He settled nicely after that.

“He didn’t have that early speed, but he’s learning you know. Maybe after another start or two he might possie up a little bit closer early on, but there was nothing wrong with his finish.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (More More More); 3.30 out to 3.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Better Option (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in making contact with Gold Budda (J. Taylor). More More More (G. Colless) also jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Noah's Smile (D. Gill) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 600m, Gold Budda (J. Taylor) had to be momentarily steadied when tightened for room between Noah's Smile and Better Option, which had a tendency to lay out.

Pinnacle Ridge (L. Cassidy) laid out in the early and middle stages. Near the 100m, Seriously Ready (M. Hellyer) was cramped for room between Red Husserati (G. Killen) and Just About Ready (A. Pattillo), which shifted in. Done All Done (R. Goltz) raced wide throughout. Red Husserati raced greenly throughout.

Stewards interviewed trainer P Balzen in relation to Gundy Moon racing extremely greenly when back in the field. Mr Balzen stated that the horse had one trial prior to today's outing and after hearing from his rider, Jim Byrne, he was of the opinion that the colt lost concentration when racing back in the field. Mr Balzen advised that he intended to experiment with blinkers in the horse's gear and step Gundy Moon up in distance. The explanation was noted.
