DOOM JAN 26 - BYRNE EXCELS AT DOOMBEN

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, January 27, 2010

There is a new leader in the chase for the Brisbane Jockeys Premiership.

Jim Byrne has been riding at the top of his form for many months now. Doubles have been common-place for the hard-working rider and his steady supply of winners has kept him in touch with Premiership favourites Larry Cassidy and Stathi Katsidis.

Yesterday at Doomben, Cassidy and Katsidis were reduced to virtual spectators as Byrne produced a dominant display of race-riding which saw him salute in five races on the card. These winners took him to the top of the Premiership ladder with a total of 38 victories. Cassidy has 36 winners behind his name. Katsidis is on 33. Katsidis is ten winners clear of the fourth placed Glen Colless.

Byrne’s five winners came for five different stables. He scored a quick double in the first two races when winning on Showciti ($3.80) for trainer Maryann Thexton and Fly With Me, a $21.00 outsider for trainer Bevan Laming.

Byrne then added to that total by riding the winners of races five, six and seven. Race five went the way of Purr Of Glory, a $5.00 chance trained by Kelly Schweida. The winner of race six was the $2.50 favourite Red Sphere, trained by John Morrisey and Byrne’s final winner was aboard another main fancy, the Jason McLachlan trained Johnnieontherocks ($3.60).
