DOOM JAN 26 - CARRY THE CLUBS COMES UP TRUMPS

By Graham Potter | Thursday, January 28, 2010

Doomben, January 26, 2010.
Track - Good 2. Rail - out 0.5m.
NMW Handicap - 1010m. Time: 57.67. (Carrying 57.5kg).
1 Carry The Clubs; 2 Perugin Thought; 3 Haizum.

Carry The Clubs came up trumps in his first run in Brisbane when beating Perugin Thought by a short-neck in his first outing for the Darren Bell stable.

The four-year-old chestnut was quickly into stride and stayed right on top of the speed in a pressurised run to corner in second place right alongside the front-running Samui Star. There was no let-up in the straight as Carry The Clubs maintained his strong, sustained effort to edge past Samui Star approaching the 200m mark.

Carry The Clubs made the race his own over the next 100m and, while Perugin Thought and Haizum did close up late to reduce the winning margin a short-neck, the result was never in doubt.

Carry The Clubs now has a race record of nine wins from nineteen starts. He also has eight minor placings to his credit.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Darren Bell: “Actually, Tony Pattillo recommended to the people that the horse come to me, which I’m very appreciative of. This was his first start for us. It was sent down to me in terrific order.

“Look, he’s got good form up there (in Rockhampton and Mackay), but it was just a bit hard to line up how he would measure up here so I was feeling my way around with him a bit today. If you look at him, he is a beautiful type of horse with a good, consistent record.

“I thought he would be competitive here and he should improve on that too, because we’ve probably been a little bit easy on him and given him time to settle in and he is probably not fully wound up yet either. So it is a really good result.”

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “I thought he might have felt the pinch a bit sooner, because they did pressure him the whole race, but he was good enough. It was a good win.

“Yeah, it’s nice getting a city double (Bowditch won earlier aboard Another Takeover). I feel a bit for Tony Pattillo. I bet he’s probably sitting at home in pain and he’s probably feeling it a bit more now ... and I’m just thankful Jimmy (Byrne) didn’t have a ride in it. He was scratched so that was a big help.” Byrne rode five winners on the card.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Carry The Clubs): 16.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite (Bruleur): 2.30 in to 2.20 out to 2.70. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Perugin Thought (App J. Wood), Sequential Point (R. Agnew) and Snorkel (J. Holder) were all tightened for room at the start between Haizum (N. Tomizawa) and Inanna (J. Taylor), which after receiving contact from Morcombe (App S. Bogenhuber) became unbalanced and shifted in. In this incident Snorkel had to be checked and lost its position.

Haizum over-raced in the early stages on the heels of Tennessee Blue (R. Goltz).

R. Agnew the rider of Sequential Point reported that he was unable to test his mount at any stage in the home straight due to it hanging in. Trainer P. Cunningham was advised that the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before again racing.

S. Morrisey trainer of Bruleur, which hung out on the home turn taking Morcombe (App S. Bogenhuber) very wide, was advised that the horse must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next race start. A post race veterinary examination of Bruleur revealed no abnormalities.

Morcombe and Pat Attack (K. Yoshida) raced wide throughout.

A post race veterinary examination of Tennessee Blue revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer D. Baker was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness including the results of an ECG must be provided and Tennessee Blue must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before again racing.
