CANT FEB 03 - FROM THE VAULT WINS ON DEBUT

By Scott Gooley | Thursday, February 4, 2010

Canterbury, February 3, 2010.
Track - Dead 5. Rail - Out 6m.
Maiden Handicap (2yo) - 1250m. Time: 1.15.64 (Carrying 56.5kg).
1 From The Vault; 2 Circle of Power; 3 In Expectation.

Prominent owner Peter Horwitz has enjoyed a tremendous run of success with a number of his horses in recent months.

Scouting Wide has won three of his last six starts, including the Listed Christmas Cup. His Group 1 winner, Dealer Principal returned to racing in January with a slashing win first up. Geared Up won at its most recent start and, just for good measure, Horwitz also owns leading Golden Slipper contender Solar Charged who, at her only race start to date, recorded an impressive five length win.

The current run of success continued for Horwitz at Canterbury on Wednesday when his two year old gelding, From The Vault stepped out for his debut in the McGrath Foundation Lunch Maiden (1250m.)

Readied for his first race start with two solid barrier trials, From the Vault drew the outside gate in the field of seven. Ridden by Mitchell Bell, the gelding was allowed to settle in fifth spot three horses off the fence as race favourite Circle of Power ($1.80), set a solid pace in front.

As the field put the 600m mark behind them, From the Vault was still posted three wide and with no cover. It was at this time that Bell heeled the son of Charge Forward along and he began to make steady ground with strong run.

Turning for home, From The Vault had ran into second place, three lengths in arrears of Circle of Power who had kicked away at the top of the straight.

Racing toward the 200m pole, the margin was beginning to diminish noticeably as Bell asked the Mark De Montfort galloper for a final effort.

In impressive final furlong display, From The Vault ($5.00) won going away by two lengths from Circle Of Power. There was a further two and three quarter lengths back to In Expectation ($9.50) in third.

“Always a bit confident when we straightened up that, when he got balanced up properly, he’d get there in the end.” Bell confided after the race.

“He looks like he’s going to turn out to be a nice horse.”

“We’ve always had a bit of an opinion of him even before he got to his trials, but he’s improved out of sight even since his trials.

Trainer Mark de Montfort confirmed Bell’s appraisal by comparing the gelding to his stable star McClintock.

“He reminds me a lot of McClintock. He’s got the same sort of attitude. I just hope he can go as far as McClintock”

“I told Peter (Horwitz) I thought he was pretty good.”

“The alley today wasn’t going to help us, but Mitch (Bell) rode him patiently. He didn’t get a lot of cover but he reined them in pretty quick.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Circle Of Power bounded on jumping and lost ground. Where Izzy was slow to begin.

When being restrained to obtain cover near the 700m behind La Capone, Healing Power shifted in and became awkward on the heels of that runner. G Schofield, rider of In Expectation accidentally dropped his whip near the 500m.

Near the 100m Circle Of Power and From The Vault came together due to both runners shifting ground. A veterinary examination of La Capone revealed filly to be displaying a poor post race
recovery and to be tying up.
