FLEM MAR 06 - DISSOLVED DELIVERS A WELL JUDGED VICTORY

By Graham Potter | Monday, March 8, 2010

Flemington, March 6, 2010.
Track - Dead 5. Rail - True.
MSS Security Stakes (Listed - 3yo) - 1100m.
Time: 1.04.26 (Carrying 53.5kgs).
1 Dissolved; 2 Kwassa Kwassa; 3 Rarefied.

The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes trained Dissolved scored a solid, second-up win when he proved too strong for his rivals in his first go in Listed company.

The lightly raced son of Lonhro was a debut winner and won two out of three in his first prep. He was then beaten into third place when resuming at Moonee Valley last time. Up until that loss, Dissolved had led in all four of his starts and there was a subtle change of tactics this time around which arguably helped him secure his third career victory.

As the field remained relatively compact early on, moving down the centre of the track in a group, jockey Steven King restrained his mount and allowed the rank outsider Kwassa Kwassa to go to the front.

Once Kwassa Kwassa had pushed forward, King had Dissolved right on the leader’ s tail where he raced alongside Avenue as these two runners took the trail, a little over a length behind Kwassa Kwassa.

Dissolved initially appeared to resent being hard held. He over-raced for a short period before King persuaded him to settle to a degree, but he was clearly a happier horse when he switched around the heels of Kwaasa Kwassa, making a marginal shift to the outside, and was given more rein to go out after the leader approaching the 200m mark.

While Dissolved responded well to the chase, Kwassa Kwassa was making a mockery of his odds, and he fought on bravely and it took just shy of 100m for Dissolved to finally get the measure of his game rival, but the Hawkes trained runner did just that and he had his race won with a little over 100m left to run and he moved clear to score by 1.30 lengths.

Kwassa Kwassa’s effort was good enough to keep second place, 1.20 lengths ahead of the favourite Rarefied who was never far off the action, but also never close enough to threaten the result.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Steven King: “I was told to take a sit behind the leader. You know this horse has never had a chance to sit behind something, so today was a good day for it.

“The leader sort of sat in the middle of the track, so I thought I would stalk him the whole way down the straight ... keep my horse relaxed.

“I expected them to come in closer to the rail than they did. In saying that, you know, I was supposed to follow the leader and I had every chance to get out when I wanted to.”

PRICES:
Dissolved (9.00); Kwassa Kwassa (101.00); Rarefied (3.40 favourite).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trounce jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Rock Face and Free Spirited both jumped awkwardly and came together.

Dissolved over-raced in the early stages when being restrained.

Near the 1000m Common Interest, which was being restrained, had to be eased to avoid the heels of Rarefied which shifted out slightly. Common Interest then continued to over-race for some distance.

N Beriman rider of Nicastro pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137a, the careless riding being that passing the 100m she permitted her mount to shift in while riding it along with the whip when insufficiently clear of Trounce which had to be checked.

N Beriman had her license to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight March 10 and to expire at midnight March 21, a total of 12 meetings (4 city, 8 country). The careless riding was found to be in the mid-range which equates to 14 meetings however concessions were made for N Beriman’s guilty plea.

Over the concluding stages Kwassa Kwassa (L McGill) shifted in several horses whilst being ridden along with the whip inconveniencing Rarefied approaching the winning post. L McGill was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

D Dunn could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of Common Interest.
