THE TOBY AND TRENT EDMONDS TRAINING PARTNERSHIP WILL COME TO AN END NEXT MONTH

By Graham Potter | Thursday, December 21, 2023

The Toby and Trent Edmonds training partnership will come to an end on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast next month, the scene of one the stable’s greatest victories when Houtzen took out the 2007 running of Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic, maintaining his unbeaten record at the time.

“I have always wanted to test myself interstate,” said Trent Edmonds. “One hundred percent I have always wanted to do that.

“We’ll be going to Pakenham. My partner’s family are down there ... they are basically around the corner from Pakenham ... very close ... so, the support network for all of us and the kids is there, which will be fantastic for us.

“I’ve got a second child due in February and my little girl isn’t of school age yet, so I didn’t want to wait until she’s ready to go to school. I thought I’d try something while school is not a factor so we could move her with minimal fuss and disruption.

“Also, the sooner I start on my own the sooner I can establish myself. So, we are having a go.

“Obviously, I will not be starting off with a large number of horses,” continued Edmonds. “I’m starting off quite small and being a bit organic about it.

“I want to build organically as well ... I don’t want to swell too quickly. I want to start off small and be hands on build once I’ve got systems in place because it is a big adjustment training in different climates ... training at the Gold Coast where it is hot and humid and then going down there in the winter months.

“It’s a big change, so I’ll need to apply myself and learn on my feet. It will all be a learning experience which will help me in the future and hopefully we can have a bit of luck.

“I’m very happy to be doing it. It is exciting. It is the right time,” concluded Edmonds.

For Toby Edmonds, Trent’s desire and decision to move to Pakenham makes perfect sense.

“Trent has always wanted to move to New South Wales or Victoria ... and, with his partner’s family being in Pakenham area, it makes sense for them to move there,” said Toby Edmonds.

“Trent’s been with me long enough now and it’s time for him manage a career himself.

“As for me, no, I’m not ready to retire yet. I’ll still be here.”
