DOOM MAR 31 - FIRST-UP WIN FOR HULL CITY

By Graham Potter | Friday, April 2, 2010

Doomben, March 31, 2010.
Track - Dead 4. Rail - out 6.5m.
Class 3 Handicap (fillies & Mares) - 1030m. Time: 1-00.06. (Carrying 57kg).
1 Hull City; 2 Grandiva; 3 Any Wonder.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Gollan: “Oh it was a good win and it was nice to win.

“We bought her late last year. We bought her out of the paddock and she’s had a light spell ... we’ve gave her a light spell and then brought her up and that’s the first start for us today.

“I brought her down here the other day and Larry (Cassidy) gave it a trial for me. He said she gave him a really good feel. I said there was a race this week for her. That’s what we’d planned. He was happy to jump on her and they’ve both done a great job.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “I rode it in a trial last week. I said to the owner, geez what’s this ... because it absolutely brained them.

“They said it trialled really terribly at Toowoomba and they wanted to see it trial again because they know it goes good, and they were dumbfounded and they said they were going to run it today. I said it will win.

“When it played up it had me a bit worried. But, yeah, that run will improve it again.” (Cassidy was twice unseated in the parade ring prior to the race as Hull City played up. That prompted trainer Bryan Guy, who was passing, to quip, Larry much think it’s got a chance ... he’s got back on it twice).

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Hull City): 4.00 in to 3.50.
Favourite (Lady Selene): 2.50 in to 2.35 out to 2.60.Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Tafeer, which became fractious in its race-day stall, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that the filly was lame and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 3.58 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.

Bids (B. Looker) was slow to begin.

Near the 900m Grandiva had to be eased when tightened for room between Wedding Lily and Lady Selene (M. Cahill), which shifted in slightly when not fully clear. M. Cahill was reminded of his obligations to ensure he is clear when shifting ground in future.

Adventurous Angel (J. Taylor) and Phar Too Fast (C. Munce) raced wide throughout.

Passing the 800m Any Wonder (R. Hinricks) got its head up when over-racing.

Approaching the 300m Grandiva shifted out to improve around the heels of Any Wonder, taking Wedding Lily, Adventurous Angel and Phar Too Fast wider on the track. J. Byrne was issued with a reprimand under AR. 137(a) and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of Lady Selene. M. Cahill explained that he allowed the filly to settle where she was comfortable in the early stages and when three wide was able to obtain cover.

He added that he was momentarily inconvenienced near the 300m and following this Lady Selene worked to the line well when placed under pressure. M. Cahill added that Lady Selene would appreciate a step-up in distance in future starts.

A post-race veterinary examination of Lady Selene failed to reveal any abnormalities.
