IPSW JUNE 19 - KRYPTELON CRUSHES THE OPPOSITION

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Ipswich, June 19, 2010.
Gai Waterhouse Classic (Fillies & Mares - Listed - Quality) - 1350m.
Time: 1-19.69. (Carrying 53kg).
Track - Good 2. Rail - True.
1 Kryptelon; 2 Beyonce's Star; 3 Paprika.

The David Kelly trained Kryptelon, unwanted in the betting at $14, shattered the hopes of her rivals when she produced a barn-storming finish which carried her to a clear-cut victory which was the eighth success of her career.

Kryptelon was resuming from a spell which took her off the track for four months. In her previous preparation, which covered four starts, Kryptelon had finished second three lengths behind Plain Magic in the Magic Millions Fillies And Mares over 1300m at the Gold Coast.

She then had to settle for second place in her next start when again beaten by Plain Magic in the Listed Nudgee Quality over 1200m at Eagle Farm. This time Kryptelon just missed when only just failing to snare Plan Magic and going down by the narrowest of margins. Add in the fact that on that day she beat home no less a luminary than Alverta, who raced at Royal Ascot during last week, and it becomes obvious that Kryptelon's long odds was not in keeping with her outright ability.

The concern obviously was that Kryptelon was racing first-up and her record racing fresh, while not being bad, was also not flash. That was just enough to put doubt in punters minds.

But those who took a leap of faith about her chances were not disappointed.

The five-year-old was patiently ridden in the early part by jockey Paul Hammersley. Kryptelon loped along in midfield early on as firstly Beyonce's Star and then Fasliyev Dancer (who rushed around her field from an outside draw) set the early target.

As Fasliyev Dancer started to stretch the field out, Kryptelon raced in eighth then ninth position, now worse than midfield but still travelling well within herself.

Fasliyev Dancer was game enough until the turn, but her early effort had taken its toll and when Beyonce's Star put her to the sword at the top of the straight Fasliyev Dancer quickly surrendered her lead. Tobouggie Woogie and Seething Duck were next best at that stage, but there was a shake-up happening in the chasing pack which was to have the major impact on the result.

As Beyonce's Star hit the lead, Kryptelon was all of seven lengths off the action, racing in restricted galloping room as she tried to track Paprika (who was installed as favourite following Jerezana's withdrawal at the barriers) into the race.

That route was fraught with danger though as Paprika, who was also racing tight behind runners, was looking for a run of her own on straightening. La Bella Luisa was racing to the outside of Paprika and Hammersley was aiming for the small gap between those runners. When that gap closed and Kryptelon could not get through without touching sides she bumped La Bella Luisa and Hammersley had to take hold and momentarily check his mount as the contact caused the mare to become unbalanced.

With Beyonce's Star speeding away at the head of affairs and Paprika getting first run on Kryptelon, the David Kelly runner would have been forgiven if her chance had ended right there. But neither horse nor rider were about to give up on the cause. They got balanced up again ... knuckled down and started to run at the leaders.

Paprika was now sprinting out ahead of Kryptelon in a run that was taken her up to the leaders and Hammersley zeroed in on the blue silks up ahead of him. That was the first challenge and it was quickly dispatched as Kryptelon reeled in Paprika and flashed past the favourite with 100m left to run.

That left the game Beyonce's Star as the last, lonely target up front. Game as Beyonce's Star was in fighting on to the line, she simply had no answer to the race winning acceleration of Kryptelon, who got to the front when it mattered most to win going away, still with something in hand, by a convincing one length margin.

Beyonce's star finished second. Paprika was third.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Kelly: “Yeah, no, she has been knocking at the door in these big races. I’m just glad to see that she’s done it.

“Her first-up form hasn’t been that good, but, like before I’d only put her in 1000m races first-up. They would always just run her off her legs. Today (over 1350m) she sort of stayed in touch.

“She’s had two jump-outs and a barrier trial. I thought if she got a nice, easy run in transit she would let down well … which she did. I was quietly confident. I ride a lot of work myself which helps. The day I can’t do that is probably the day I give it away.

“I was going to freshen her up and take her to the Grafton Ramornie, so that’s probably my main aim at the moment. That’s about three or four weeks away so that is where she will head.

“It’s my home town. I’d like to win the race.”

Jockey Paul Hammersley: “Yeah, it’s been a real good day." (Hammersley rode three winners). I’m suspended after today, so it will be a real nice holiday.

“David (Kelly) said I might have to help the horse over 1350 first-up. At her best she’s really good, but the concern was being first-up. So I had to try and ride her to get the 1350.

“We got a lovely run in transit … apart from probably about the 450 or the 400. We copped a little bit of interference there, but once she got out into the open and started to wind up, she hit the line really nicely.

“I knew I had the first couple in front of me beat. It was just the leader that I was worried about at the furlong, but we saw it off.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kryptelon): 14.00 steady.
Favourite (Jerezana): 1.90 out to 2.20. Scratched at barrier.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Upon arrival at the barriers Express Air was examined by the veterinary surgeon at the request of the rider. Following this inspection Express Air was cleared to start.

Jerezana which reared and got its head caught in the barrier partition was declared a late scratching at 4.24 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer P. Snowden's stable representative P. Reid was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for the filly prior to it racing again.

Fasliyev Dancer (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground and was then obliged to race wide until obtaining the lead near the 800m.

J. Holder the rider of Dual Chamber reported that he was held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight became awkward on the heels of Tobouggie Woogie (S. Seamer) when that horse shifted in.

J. Holder added a run then became available forward of him between Tobouggie Woogie and Seething Duck (R. McMahon) however, he was reluctant to take advantage of it when Seething Duck shifted out a short distance later. J. Holder further added that Tobouggie Woogie shifted in closing that run and from that point on the horse was held up and unable to be fully tested at any stage of the home straight.

Express Air (G. Colless) raced extremely wide throughout the event.

Tobouggie Woogie (S. Seamer), La Bella Luisa (J. Bowditch) and Go Johemma (D. Nikolic) raced wide throughout the event.
