RAND, JULY 24 - TWO FROM TWO FOR SQUAMOSA

By Garry Legg | Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Randwick, July 24, 2010.
Track - Heavy. Rail - True.
Two-year-old Handicap - 1400m.
Margins: 3, 3.25. Time: 1:26.46. (Carrying 57kg).
1 Squamosa ($1.65 favourite), 2 Giresun ($6), 3 Beg ($6.50).

Trainer Gai Waterhouse again produced rising star Squamosa in beautiful order as he heads towards the Golden Rose.

A smart colt, Squamosa gave favourite backers no concerns as he romped home for his second win from as many starts.

Jockey Nash Rawiller had no hesitation in letting the Gai Waterhouse trained two-year-old stride to the lead on straightening and he galloped away to score by a decisive margin.

Rawiller concentrated on keeping the smart Not A Single Doubt colt racing straight and he only need to give Squamosa a couple of backhanded reminders in the run to the line.

Squamosa, like most of Waterhouse’s horses showed good gate speed, but Rawiller was content to give up the lead and let Syntonic cross him and move into a clear lead at the 800m.

It was good education for the Not A Single Doubt colt as he settled perfectly. However, so well was he travelling Rawiller had to let Squamosa stride up to be level with Syntonic at the 600m.

Rawiller had a lapful of horse and quickly gained the upper hand and put two or three lengths on rivals by the 300m.

There were no dangers in sight, although Giresun took some ground off the winner when the race was already over, but after easy sectionals in the early part nothing was going to catch Squamosa.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Denise Martin (Owner syndicate manager): ‘’When they win it’s not as expensive is it?

“He’s a really lovely colt. He was quite immature as a baby and he’s not a big horse, but he’s just furnished into a lovely colt and he’s so strong.

“The name Squamosa is an endangered clam if need to know what the name means. Anyway, he’s a very talented colt, that’s the important thing.’’

Trainer Gai Waterhouse. ‘’He’s a dominant colt. I love to see them like that.

“He asserted himself beautifully in the straight. The horses around made ground, but he had it sewed up before the turn. When he came one of the fence, he just rolled into the lead and took control.’’

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Squamosa): 1.40 out to 1.65.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Syntonic jumped out at the start and hampered My Folly.

Fort Chauvel was slow to begin.

A post race veterinary examination of My Folly did not reveal any abnormalities.

Mr N Ward, trainer of My Folly, which finished distanced, advised that he intended to
geld the colt. Mr Ward was notified not to nominate My Folly in the metropolitan area
until it had established provincial form.
