RAND JULY 24 - KIMBERLEY KID GIVES RAWILLER HIS THIRD WIN FOR THE DAY

By Garry Legg | Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Randwick, July 24, 2010.
Track - Heavy. Rail - True.
Benchmark 74 Handicap - 1200m.
Margins: 1.50, 0.50. Time: 1:13.20. (carrying 57kg).
1 Kimberley Kid ($8.50); 2 Tuscan Breeze ($14); 3 Tarrabandra ($10).

Leading Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller scored his third win of the day when he powered home aboard the David Payne trained Kimberley Kid.

Kimblerley Kid jumped from the outside gate and although he began well Rawiller opted to ease back and look for a position near the rear of the seven horse field.

It took 400m for the leaders to sort themselves out with Not A Snip Of Doubt finally pressing forward and leading on the fence. Tarrabadra sat at his girth while Lucky Elmo was trapped out three deep.

Rawiller was also content to sit out wide, but with Lucky Elmo as cover he was able to monitor the favourite Key West, who was racing to his inside.

Rawiller looked supremely confident aboard Kimberley Kid before the home turn and once again his judgement proved correct.

Once the field straightened Kimberley Kid loomed up and made a strong challenge on the outside.

At the 300m Not A Snip of doubt had moved four or five horses away from the inside fence and was being challenged for the lead by Tarrabandra.

No sooner had Tarrabandra hit the front Kimberley Kid pounced on them both. The three-year-old was given several backhanders from Rawiller and he quickly gathered them in and started to race away at the 200m, the race safely in his keeping.

Kimberley Kid went on to score impressively, with Rawiller sitting-up on the Johannesburg gelding just before the line.

Tuscan Breeze came home well near the fence to take second and Tarrabandra battled on well for third.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Payne: ‘’I’ve drawn nine. I said to Nash, just let a couple lead him, but he used his brains once he couldn’t get there.

“Yeh, they (the Johannesburg progeny) love the mud.

“I think the handicapper will get him, so I don’t know where he’ll go to now.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kimberley Kid): 10.00 out to 12.00 in to 8.50.
Favourite (Key West): 2.10 out to $2.70 in to $2.45.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Purettan was a late withdrawal at 3.17 pm when that gelding was unable to be saddled.

Trainer Ms J Hardy was advised that Purettan would be required to prove its pre-race manners in a race day trial prior to being permitted to start again.

Tarrabandra was slow to begin.

At the entrance to the straight Tuscan Breeze was steadied and shifted to the inside of Trilione to obtain clear running.

When questioned, App. B Avdulla, rider of Trilione, stated that the filly had trialled and worked well leading into the race, but failed to handle today’s heavy track.

A post race veterinary examination of Trilione did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned regarding Kimberley Kid settling further back in the field today, N Rawiller stated he was under no specific instructions, other than to ensure that he obtained cover on the gelding in the early stages.

He added that in the early stages, after commencing well, he attempted to obtain cover behind Lucky Elmo, however, when that runner did not go as far forward as he had anticipated, he was obliged to settle further back than he had intended so as to obtain cover.
