RYAN MOORE WILL RIDE STORM BOY IN THE SLIPPER

By Graham Potter | Thursday, March 14, 2024

Coolmore has confirmed Ryan Moore as the rider of the long-time race favourite Storm Boy in the Golden Slipper.

Coolmore appears to hold all the aces with their abundance of riches in the race in which their two unbeaten colts Storm Boy and Switzerland will lock horns in what is expected to be a real test of supremacy.

That abundance of riches stretches to include their choice of jockeys.

Ryan Moore, who has proved and displayed his top-tier riding prowess all around the world in every race scenario, in essence is Coolmore’s first choice rider and, as such, it does not come as any real surprise that the much-hyped Storm Boy will be his ride in the Slipper ... with Moore looking for back-to-back wins in the big race having saluted last year aboard the Chris Waller trained Shinzo, also in the Coolmore colours.

Interestingly enough, for such a high-profile colt, Moore will be the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Storm Boy’s fourth rider in five starts with Tim Clark having won on him on debut, Adam Hyeronimus doing the honours in both in the Group 3 B J McLachlan and the Magic Millions Two-year-old Classic before James McDonald was handed the reins.

James McDonald who rode Storm Boy in the colt’s lead-up run ... and win ... in the Group 2 Skyline had been a Storm Boy rider possibility for the Slipper, but, with the Moore booking, he will now stay with Switzerland, the unbeaten Snitzel colt who McDonald had partnered in two of his three wins, most notably when saluting in the Group 2 Todman in his last start.

Switzerland is trained by Chris Waller who thus is also aiming for a second successive win in the race.

Storm Boy and Switzerland are the first and second favourites for the Golden Slipper.
