WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, MARCH 23. 2024

By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 22, 2024

EAGLE FARM this weekend. Nine races. The track is rated ‘Good.’ The rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit. In recent weeks the track has played very fast and jockeys have elected to stay off the rail. I expect them to come wide this weekend as the races progress across the day.

Time to look at the program.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

A BM68 race over 1200 metres with a massive field to start the day.

I think the race is between the two Tony Gollan runners. Fumiko (10) raced on the Gold Coast race day where there were issues with the track. The day favoured on pace runners – this mare got too far back and could not make up ground. So, if you overlook that effort and go with the previous starts where she raced well, she looks appealing. Cejay Graham will ride. From barrier 11, I think she races midfield and sprints late to win - $10 is a great price.

Jimmy Orman will ride the stable mate Amathuba (15). She has had a month freshen up since her last effort in a midweek race at Doomben. Drawn the rails – should be in the leading runners – she gets all the favours.

Strapparsi (4) is Kris Lees Racing runner. Was forced to race wide from an awful barrier last time out. Drawn better here in barrier 3 – Bailey Wheeler rides and claims 2 kilograms – a definite contender in the race.

It is a tough way to start the day – some each way chances in my other selections.

Selections:

10 – Fumiko
15 – Amathuba
4 – Strapparsi
2 – Starry Eyes
Rough chances – (6) Compelling Truth & (9) Fixated

Race 2

A Class 1 grade race over 1600 metres.

Kristen Buchanan has brought some runners to QLD looking for some prize money. Silent Russian (5) is third up here after two solid efforts over a mile where he has placed in each start. Has drawn wide in barrier 10 – so may need some luck getting into a nice position – Bailey Wheeler will ride.

The stable mate is Luskaire (7), a last start winner at Tamworth over a mile. Taylor Marshall will ride here. He looks like a progressive type. His win in maiden company last time was full of merit.

Intentional Lass (10) is a Matthew Dunn runner with Andrew Mallyon riding. Second up last time out at Grafton over 1400 metres. His best efforts were over longer distance last preparation – this distance and class is ideal for this stage of his preparation.

Connecticut (1) is trained by Geran Racing – Jimmy Orman rides. Has had his first run at Ipswich for the new trainers. Was not disgraced. He looked like he struggled on the Ipswich circuit. The larger Eagle Farm track could benefit.

Cryptic Verse (14) is a Josh King runner. Blinkers are off – $51 on offer – I think this is massive overs. Anthony Allen who rode a double last Saturday and then another winner at Doomben on Wednesday will ride.

Selections:

5 – Silent Russian
10 – Intentional Lass
1 – Connecticut
7 – Luskaire
Rough chances – (14) Cryptic Verse

Race 3

A Class 3 race over 1400 metres.

Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted train Ocean Zar (15) who pulled up with the thumps and dehydrated after his last effort. That run was over a mile. Back in distance, he should be ready to turn things around here. He won first up on this track and distance at a midweek meeting. He looks well placed and Boris Thornton will ride from barrier 2.

Schmoozer (5) has been racing consistently. Trained by Steve Tregea and Marnu Potgieter will be riding and his 3 kilogram claim will be of huge benefit. Drawn in barrier 4 and will probably trail behind some other speedsters in the race – I think that this may assist him late as he will not be exposed as he has in his recent efforts.

Dark Harmony (1), trained by Chris Munce and ridden by Mark Du Plessis, will strip fitter for the effort at the Gold Coast where the track did him no favours. His second up record is admirable, and he goes well on this track.

Tenzing will have Jimmy Orman aboard for Kris Lees. He resumes here with a few trials under his belt. He will appreciate the solid tempo – if he is fit enough, he will be flying home late.

Selections:

15 – Ocean Zar
5 – Schmoozer
1 – Dark Harmony
6 – Tenzing
Rough chance – (12) Kinetic

Race 4

A race for the two-year-old runners over 1000 metres.

Mishani Lily (3) is trained by Les Ross. A solid effort last time out in the JEWEL on the Gold Coast over 1200 metres. This filly goes better over 1000 metres – will race handy or lead. Jimmy Orman aboard – I really think she is well placed here in this grade from barrier 6.

Devine Force is undefeated in his two starts. Impressive winner on both occasions for Chris Munce. Robbie Dolan will ride again. She is versatile – racing both on and off the speed. This will suit her as there is some speed in this race.

El Morzillo (2) is a Kelly Schweida Racing runner with Cejay Graham riding. She raced at Randwick five weeks ago. She had no luck in the straight and could not get out and run home. Forget that run. She will be better back on her home track – barrier 15 is of some concern.

Zouna (4) trained by Lawrie Mayfield Smith and Adin Thompson riding. They won a race last weekend and paired up with this colt who won on debut and ran good sectionals.

A real rough chance at $41 is the Glenn Thornton trained Butwedid (5). Was solid on debut in December. Then tipped out and freshened – a recent barrier trial winner – I like him as a rough chance – Damien Thornton aboard.

Selections:

3 – Mishani Lily
1 – Devine Force
2 – El Morzillo
4 – Zouna
Rough chance – (5) Butwedid & (11) Cosmo Centarus

Race 5

A race for the three-year-old runners over 1000 metres.

A NSW visitor Malaboom (4) hopefully lives up to his name and goes BOOM for trainer Matthew Dale. Comes off some tough runs and has had a freshen up. A recent solid barrier trial and a trip to QLD – looks an ideal race for him.

Outwieghed (1) led in the Gold Coast last time out and was run down late by Chinny Boom. I just do not know what to make of that run as it was a biased leader track – I think she may struggle here. The filly is trained by Paula Barron and Bailey Wheeler will ride and claim 2 kilograms.

North of Eli (7), trained by Matthew Dunn, is first up here with trials under his belt, is drawn well Jake Bayliss to ride. Could cause an upset as he does race well fresh.

Selections:

4 – Malaboom
1 – Outweighed
7 – North Of Eli
12 – Don’t Cha Wish

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie.

A Class 6 race over 1000 metres.

I like one going up in grade and down in weights from the Lindsay Gough yards – Apophis (13) – he is an emergency but hopefully will sneak into the field. He started here a month ago. A recent barrier trial win – drawn well in barrier 3 – Georgina Cartwright will ride again. I think he gets a massive advantage down in the weights and he will be belting home late.

Bring Me Kash (9) won at the Gold Coast last time out. He was sensationally backed on the day and they got the KASH! Darryl Ward trains this exciting gelding that has 6 wins from 11 starts. He seems to have got him racing well. I see that Dale Smith will ride him. He does have an impressive record on him – 9 rides for 5 wins.

The Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted runners Hold On Honey (2) and Red Rubi (8) will perform well. Last start winner Hold On Honey (2) will be competitive – however, does go up in the weights – may be a telling factor late.

The stable mate Red Rubi (8) meets the stable mate better at the weights after a last start defeat – Nikita Beriman will ride. Her second up record is solid – keep safe.

Selections:

13 – Apophis
9 – Bring Me Kash
2 – Hold On Honey
6 – Muschialli
Rough chances – (8) Red Rubi

Race 7

The first leg of the Treble.

BM78 class race over 1200 metres.

Kris Lees Racing have Bubba’s Bay (1) coming off a last start win. Bailey Wheeler has the ride. Big weight to contend with but she will be competitive again.

Outlawed (4) from the Robert Heathcote stable resumed last time out after an 18-week spell. Was not disgraced after leading and capitulating late. Will strip fitter for that run and will be handy in the running with Jake Molloy claiming 3 kilograms.

Crazy Train (3) is the way I have gone here from the Matthew Dunn Racing yards. She has had a five week freshen up and I just think she got too far back last time at Doomben. She always races midfield so she will need some luck – but there is some solid speed here and that should see her hard to hold out at $18. Martin Harley will ride.

A big watch on the Stuart Kendrick runner Tojaki (7) who resumes here. A lightly raced mare who strung some wins together last prep – Robbie Dolan rode her in a recent trial and retains the ride here. He is undefeated on her with 2 rides for 2 wins.

Selections:

3 – Crazy Train
4 – Outlawed
1 – Bubba’s Bay
7 – Tojaki
Rough chance – (15) Brave Maso

Race 8

A BM78 race here over 1200 metres.

Looks like Gollan Racing has a strong representation with Millane (5) who resumed with a dominant win. Then he was a heavily backed favourite and didn’t really race up to his first up winning form – in fact he was disappointing. There were no excuses for the run – the vets found no abnormalities after the race. Maybe just a case of the second up phobia – when you look at his stats he has never performed well second up. That is the same for his third up record – can he correct those stats?

The stable mate is Rockribbed (10) resuming for the new stable in QLD after racing in Victoria. A recent strong barrier trial would suggest that he has a chance of winning for his new stable. Angela Jones will ride.

The Corey and Kylie Geran runners are not without some hope as well. Our Magnus (8) with Michael Rodd produced a solid effort first up – will strip fitter and he does thrive on this track.

Kevin Kemp trains This Is One (15) who jumped, led and destroyed the field last time out at the Gold Coast at $51. Bubba Tilley was all smiles as he approached the 100 metre mark – it was a striking win – but was it enhanced by the track bias on the day?

Selections:

10 – Rockribbed
8 – Our Magnus
2 – Millane
15 – This Is One
Rough chance – (11) Starzam

Race 9

Open class race here over 1600 metres to finish off the day.

Daytona Bay (2) raced over 1800 metres at the Gold Coast last time out. Got run down in the shadows of the post with a huge weight. Back to the mile that he seems to enjoy most – I think he is a good thing to fill up the pockets. Trained by Kelly Schweida and Jimmy Orman will ride.

Perfect Thought (7) is trained by John Sargent in NSW. Damien Thornton will ride the gelding. He raced over 2000 metres last start. He is better suited over the mile. A three week freshen up and the trip to QLD should see him competitive here.

Red Wave (8) is trained by Sears Racing. Second up here after a solid effort at the Gold Coast over 1700 metres. He has won two times previously second up. Robbie Dolan takes the ride.

Oscar Zulu (1) is a Chris Waller runner. Despite the huge weight he looks well in here. Apprentice Tahlia Fenlon’s 3-kilogram claim will be beneficial.

Selections:

2 – Daytona Bay
7 – Perfect Thought
8 – Red Wave
1 – Oscar Zulu
