FLEM AUG 07 - CENSOR WINS FOR FREEDMAN AND NOONAN

By Taron Clarke | Monday, August 9, 2010

Flemington, August 7, 2010.
Track - Slow 7. Rail - out 9.0m.
3YO Rating 0-72 - 1410m.
Time: 1-26.73. (Carrying 56.0kg).
1 Censor; 2 Sayahailmary; 3 Retrieve.

Up and coming apprentice Jake Noonan continued on his winning way at Flemington on Saturday by riding a winning treble. Noonan, who balances his apprenticeship with his year 12 studies scored aboard Whiston and Belscenica for his father Tony, and the Lee Freedman trained galloper Censor. All three of Censor’s wins have come on rain affected going.

Censor a colt by Elusive Quality out of Freedman’s former black type placed mare Glasnost, made it three wins on the trot after victories at Kyneton and Sandown. The well bred colt is related to black type winner Avenue and the late Bruce McLachlan’s Group One winning mare Virage De Fortune.

The starter caught the line with a level dispatch and jockey Jake Noonan sent the Darley colt forward to sit outside of the early pacemaker Sayahailmary for Victoria’s premier trainer Peter Moody and his apprentice Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins. The other Darley runner in the race was the Peter Snowden trained Retrieve. Ridden by Craig Newitt, Retrieve was able to settle fifth on the fence, five lengths off the lead.

Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins was able to steady the speed visibly inside the 1000 metres and this in turn affected the racing manners of Retrieve who got up on the bit and started to over race.

The favourite Censor, relaxed beautifully in second place and jockey Noonan was content to track the leader Sayahailmary. The Darren Weir trained Magnifique Soleil was forced to push out three deep once the speed slackened to avoid the favourites heals to his immediate front.

Peter Snowden’s galloper Retrieve was able to follow the favourite as the field wheeled for home and it was the two leaders that he had to gun down in order to land the major prize. But soon after tracking on to the favourites back the Rahy colt was urged along under hard riding from Craig Newitt.

Sayahailmary balanced up in the early part of the straight one length in front of the favourite Censor with a further length and a half back to Retrieve and a host of runners including Paramour, Holder and Magnifique Soleil who were all making heavy weather of it. But it was clear that the two front running horses would fill the major end of the placing’s.

Jockey Jake Noonan was starting to get very busy on the Freedman trained galloper Censor, and set sail out after the Moody’s runner Sayahailmary. Three lengths in front of the remainder of the field, these two gallopers settled down to fight out finish. The duo raced to the 200 metre mark level pegging with the favourite Censor gradually gaining the ascendancy.

Over the final 100 metres of the race Censor got the upper hand and his class kicked in and he raced away to score a confortable victory by a length and a quarter with three quarters of a length back to the other Darley runner Retrieve in third. Retrieve was able to make up many lengths in the final hundred metres and looks to have a promising staying future ahead.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Scott Magee (Freedman Racing Foreman): “That’s three goes now for three wins and he just seems to get better and better. Jake rode him a treat, as soon as he popped outside the leader, it was always over from there.

“He absolutely loves this sort of track (slow), so it’s just onwards and upwards hopefully.

“The way he races he might get a trip. All you can do is win and that’s what he has done so far so we’re pretty happy.

“The boss (Lee Freedman) already spoke to him (Noonan) this morning and said you’ve got to be up there, especially with the rail out as far as it is today. It’s always an advantage to be on pace. He rode it an absolute treat…….couldn’t be happier.”

Jockey Jake Noonan: “He came off the bit on the corner. Ideally I wanted something to follow and it panned out perfectly. The tempo suited him and he relaxed well, but he just come off the bit for a bit and just took a while to pick up the bridle and extend … but when he did, he really continued on.

“He gives me the impression he’s going to get over a bit of ground. He relaxes pretty well but at the same time he’s pretty green and new to the game, so there’s definitely room for improvement.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Censor): 2.20 out to 2.50 into 2.45.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Master Invader jumped away very awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of Retrieve.

Lopov (NZ) hung out for a major part of the race and in doing so shifted out abruptly approaching the 1200m making heavy contact with Holder which then got unbalanced.

Apprentice J Fry (Magnifique Soleil) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the careless riding being that passing the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in, making contact with Retrieve, thereby unnecessarily crowding Retrieve to a point where he had to check away from the heels of Sunday Psalm.

J Fry had his license to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight August 10 and to expire at midnight August 19, a total of 9 race meetings (3 city, 6 country). In assessing penalty Stewards took in to account that the careless riding was in the low range and J Fry’s recent good record.

Magnifique Soleil raced wide without cover.

On straightening Paramour shifted out slightly to obtain clear running and was then taken out further by Magnifique Soleil, this resulted in Holder being inconvenienced.

S King (Master Invader) was of the opinion that the gelding had come to the end of its preparation and trainer Mr I Hutchins confirmed that Master Invader was going for a spell.
