BACK TO BEST AVONE BLOWS AWAY HER RIVALS

By Graham Potter | Saturday, August 10, 2024

The Tony and Maddysen Sears trained Avone regained her best form when outclassing her rivals in no uncertain terms in a BM70 Handicap over 1000m at a Metropolitan meeting at the Sunshine Coast on August 10.

After kicking off her career with two wins and two seconds in her first five career starts ... a series of results which included being beaten by the narrowest of margins by the subsequent Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Guineas winner Abounding in the Listed Gold Edition ... the four-year-old daughter of Spirit Of Boom was unplaced in her next four starts, before coming home in fourth place in a Three-Year-Old Fillies Handicap at Doomben on July 27.

Here, next time out, Avone was a different horse ... or rather ... she was the horse the stable had always thought she was, with the 3kg claim of Melea Castle helping to highlight the impressive galloping speed Avone can generate when in the mood.

Avone, a $6.50 chance, was pushed forward early with Castle electing to take a sit just behind the leading line. Positioned fourth, three lengths off the leader the $26 bolter Fine Your Own, but only a little over a length off second place, Avone was racing well within herself, and it was hardship for her to improve when Castle pushed the Sears trained runner up into second position in the approach to the home turn.

Straightening a length off Fine Your Own, Avone easily went by the long-time leader coming through the 300m mark and, although she was initially hounded by wall of horses spread across the track, her speed and commitment shown down the home straight simply blew the opposition away from halfway up the straight.

The official winning distance was 3.50 lengths.
