WINNO'S WINNERS: TOOWOOMBA, SEPTEMBER 28, 2024

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 27, 2024

This weekend we are up the hill and far west at TOOWOOMBA featuring the Toowoomba Cup and the Weetwood. The locals will be out in force and for sure kick on further later in town – it will be a big weekend in Toowoomba! Headaches will feature come Sunday morning for sure and certain.

This weekend with the track rated ‘Good’. The rail is in the true position this weekend and resident caller Anthony Collins will call the big day – an expert race commentator and another QLDer like his mate Josh Fleming!

The AFL Grand Final is on – Sydney Swans to thrash the Brisbane Lions by 36 points! In the NRL preliminary finals we should see Penrith and Storm moving forward to the Grand Final next weekend.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 7 TOOWOOMBA CUP

One of the feature races – the Toowoomba Cup over 2000m.

I am going for a local to win the Cup – Artful Girl (15) who is currently an emergency and will need one scratching to make the field. Trained on the track by Kevin Kemp and will be ridden by Tahlia Fenlon. The mare has won her past two starts – if she can win this race, it will be the biggest win in Fenlon’s career. Her win two starts ago at Doomben showed that she is up to this assignment. Since then, Kemp has put her over the track and distance a fortnight ago where she smashed the field. At around $14, I think she wins.

Billy Healey trains Hector De Maris (14). He won a month ago at Doomben over 2200 metres. He has been freshened since then – will run out the distance and get in the field on the minimum of 52 kilograms. Cejay Graham will be aboard again.

Chayse N Artie (12) is one of those horses that you must catch on his day. He has drawn terribly in barrier 19 – my man Luke Tarrant will ride for trainer Melissa Kelly. He is third up here – probably ready to show something. Raced as if he was looking for longer at his last start over the mile at Doomben – look for a huge improvement here.

Chris Waller trains last start winner Caboche (4) with Jimmy Orman retaining the ride. A last start winner at Doomben over this distance three weeks ago – he seems to go better with his runs spaced apart. Despite drawing barrier 16, look for Orman to give him a peach of a ride and be in the finish late when the whips are cracking.

Warp Speed (2) went around in the Cairns Cup time out. He hates wet tracks – forgive him that effort and back to a firm surface he could be another improver – Angela Jones will ride for Mark Goodwin.

Selections:

15 – Artful Girl
14 – Hector De Maris
12 – Chayse N Artie
4 – Caboche
Rough chance – (2) Warp Speed

Race 8 WEETWOOD HANDICAP

The other big feature race – the WEETWOOD, 2024.

The Sears Racing boom gelding Yellow Brick (1) resumes after a barnstorming trial win at Gatton two weeks ago. He went amiss on his recent trip to NSW and now is back ready to fire on his home track. Jimmy Orman will ride. I think that the huge 60 kilograms may tell on him late with the lightweights sprinting home in the finish – he may just get away with cheap sectionals and win. I am not keen on the short price.

Gollan Racing is well represented with four runners – all have genuine chances. I do like Brereton (14) down in the weights and drawn well in barrier two. Has run second at his past two starts – is knocking on the door for a win. Georgina Cartwright will ride. I just hope he gets a quiet run behind some speedsters and sprints late

The stable mate Hidden Wealth (10) resumed at Eagle Farm over 1000 metres and was sent out as a $1.60 favourite and put in a terrible performance – it appears that he may have had some issues. Look for an improved effort here with Angela Jones riding.

Another local runner is Wanda Fox (12) trained by Lindsay Hatch. Mark Du Plessis has only recently returned to the saddle after a long layoff due to injury – it would be wonderful to see him get a feature race win. This mare resumed at Eagle Farm over 1000 metres and destroyed the opposition. She has never won over 1200 metres – maybe with the speed on here she will be able to run it out.

Nashira (11) is trained by Mathew Hoysted and Ronnie Stewart will ride. He resumed over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm and won at good odds – this was the race that Hidden Wealth (10) was in and went terribly. He has a good second up record – could be one at each way odds to fill a place.

Selections:

12 – Wanda Rox
14 – Brereton
10 – Hidden Wealth
1 – Yellow Brick
Rough chance – (11) Nashira

Race 9

The last race – on a massive day of racing – off to the pub after this one!

A BM80 over a mile.

Selections:

4 – Awash
10 – Talk Time
5 – Tuhinga
6 – Menazzi
Rough chance – (11) It’smemario

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO beat WINNO last weekend – so let’s see what happens this weekend. I will be taking on ANTHONY COLLINS on his home turf – he does have a hometown advantage, but I am confident I can give him a towelling this weekend – how about a $10 scratchy on the result Mr Collins?

The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and COLLINS – yet another QLDer trying to inflict pain on me! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
