FLEM SEPT 04 - PINKER PINKER ON THE MONEY
By Taron Clarke | Sunday, September 5, 2010
Flemington, September 4, 2010. Track - Slow 7. Rail - True. Penetrometer 5.02. 3YO Fillies Handicap - 1100m. Time: 1-05.26. 600m Sectional: 34.77. (Carrying 53kg). 1 Pinker Pinker; 2 Spurcific; 3 Party Hard. Margins: 0.2L x 0.5L.
Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell might have a live Thousand Guineas chance after his lightly raced filly Pinker Pinker won the opening event at Flemington on Saturday.
After an impressive mid-week victory on a heavy track at Sandown some five weeks ago, Pinker Pinker was well supported by on-course punters and was sent out as a warm favourite in what was an open betting market.
Ridden by stable jockey Chris Symonds, the Reset filly settled back in the ruck of runners and was hard ridden by Symonds as the field linked up with course proper approaching the 400 metre mark.
With the whip in the left hand, Symonds was able to extricate Pinker Pinker to the outside of runners and she come with a strong run down the crown of the track with first starter, Party Hard.
Pinker Pinker and Symonds drove through and struck the front at the 50 metre mark and forged clear to post a short neck victory over Spurcific and a further half-length back to Party Hard.
The Eurell filly was able to do her best work in the last 100 metres of the event, strongly suggesting that she will be well suited as she steps up in distance on her way to the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on October 13.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Greg Eurell: “She’s done a really good job today. I am very, very happy with the result.
“I think she raced a little bit ungenerously in the middle stages of the race, so there’s probably a little bit of fine tuning there to do for her … but the 1100 metres wasn’t ideal.
“We thought they were probably going to be a little bit sharp for her over the 1100 metres.
“We were looking forward to steeping up to the 1400 metres, but she’s done it very well today and we do look forward to the 1400 metres.
“That’s (Thousand Guineas) exactly what we had in mind after the run at Sandown. We gave her a let up and got rolling again, so hopefully we head in that direction.
“The big plus with her is that she can handle all sorts of tracks, so that will help.
“David and Carol, they’ve been with the stable a long time……David had her picked out at the Melbourne sales. We had a look at her and she looked an extremely nice filly.
“She came in, broke in very well, had a little preparation and developed a splint on her leg … quite a nasty one too, so she had to have an operation and she was out for quite a while.
“They did a very good job at the clinic where she was operated on and when she came back in we had a better opportunity to see what ability she had. She certainly showed us a bit and she has gone on from there.
“I believe (the name) is a term for ‘money money’ … so I hope she keeps getting more pinker pinker."
Jockey Chris Symons: “She was pretty green.
“There was plenty of room to go for a run but she was just hesitant to go there and had that tendency to lay in at her two other starts as well.” “I don’t feel I got the best out of her, she was still floating, but she’s got plenty of ability as she’s shown in her previous two starts.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Pinker Pinker): 6.00 out to 6.50. The winner was the favourite.
Horse to follow: Pinker Pinker will appreciate the step up in journey on route to the Thousand Guineas.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Spurcific and Melted shifted out abruptly at the start. Queen Arena was slow to begin. Also on jumping away Ain’tnofallenstar and Enzed Girl (NZ) bumped.
Near the 700m Enzed Girl (NZ) was tightened for room between Ain’tnofallenstar which was laying in resulting in Enzed Girl (NZ) making contact with the hind quarters of Shaaheq which turned that horse outwards.
J Winks reported that Blink did not handle the track conditions today.
A post-race veterinary examination of Queen Arena revealed the filly to be sore behind and also had a slower than normal recovery.
