MV SEPT 11 - SUSSURO SCORES LAST-GASP VICTORY

By Taron Clarke | Sunday, September 12, 2010

Moonee Valley, September 11, 2010.
Track - Slow 6. Rail - True. Penetrometer 5.02.
3YO Fillies SW+P - 1200m.
Time: 1-13.11. 600m Sectional: 36.91. (Carrying 55kg).
1 Sussuro; 2 Canconi; 3 Cristallo.
Margins: 0.1L x 0.1L.

Mornington mentor Tony Noonan put the Galaxy Handicap disqualification of his glamour mare Ortensia behind him when promising filly Sussuro scored a last stride win at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Having only her second career start, Sussuro was able to jump up out of the ground down the Moonee Valley straight to post a narrow but impressive victory.

Sussuro hadn’t raced since an encouraging second placing behind Someday Somehow at Moonee Valley on June 14. Craig Newitt retained the mount on the lightly raced three-year-old.

Jumping from the extreme outside barrier, Newitt quickly eased the filly back to the rear of the field and spotted the favourite and early pacemaker Dutchy’s Lass some twelve lengths.

Dutchy’s Lass showed the field a clean pair of heals as the field commenced the turn for home. She led by two lengths over Lone Rock, Miss Gai Flyer and Cristallo.

Sussuro and Newitt began to make their move from the rear of the field, sweeping out three and four wide tacking on the back of Canconi as the field balanced up for the run to the judge.

The speedy Dutchy’s Lass was quickly collared by Cristallo at the 100 metre mark. At that stage she had three lengths to spare over Canconi and out wide on the track was Sussuro unleashing a barnstorming run.

In a blanket finish, Sussuro arrived in the last bound to nail rank outsider Canconi and Cristallo finishing back in third placing.

The favourite Dutchy’s Lass punctured badly over the concluding stages to finish a disappointing seventh.

The finishing burst of the winner Sussuro saw her make up three lengths in the space of the final 100 metres, and she looks destined to be better suited at the bigger tracks such as Caulfield and Flemington.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Noonan: “We’ve struggled a little bit of late.

“I didn’t think the filly could win. I just thought from barrier ten the task was going to be too great and probably with 800 metres to go it was going to be great … 600 metres to go it was still going to be great … but her performance was tremendous.

“I think she’s a lovely filly. She’s a very neat, compact filly. I knew a bit about the sire, Pete and Rex were keen on the filly and they’ve been good enough to give her a bit of time and I think they are going to get a nice filly out of it.

“She will go to the Guineas. That’s the plan with her. She won’t have a heavy spring. She will probably have one more run before it and hopefully we will be good enough to get a run in it.”

Jockey Craig Newitt: “She’s always shown plenty of promise this filly.I thought she would nearly win her first start but she just ran into a really speedy one of Gai’s around here.

“Today, drawn wide was probably a little blessing because we wanted to ride her a little bit quiet. I found myself a fair way back in the race, but they went hard and she’s got a lot of improvement left in her.

“Mid-race I thought if I can work home and run third or fourth I’ll be happy, but she’s just that sort of horse she just keeps giving. She’s very genuine and she has got a very good future.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sussuro): 9.00 out to 15.00.
Favourite (Dutchy’s Lass): 2.50 out to 3.50 in to 2.90. Finished seventh.

Horse to follow: A strong tempo set up by the favourite Dutchy’s Lass ensured the backmarkers got their chance over the 1200 metre journey. There was no more impressive finish than that of the winner who made up many lengths over the concluding furlong to get the judges verdict in the last stride. Sussuro will press on towards a Thousand Guineas berth and will only improve as the distances increase.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cristallo and Glenkinchie made heavy contact on jumping away.

Near the 1000m, Cristallo shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of Miss Gai Flyer which in turn placed Lone Rock in restricted room. Lone Rock then shifted in and brushed the running rail. Canconi, which was following, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Cristallo when it was able to gain a position one off the fence behind Miss Gai Flyer. N. Hall was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Passing the 400m, Jalsah was held up for clear running when Glenkinchie was commencing to give ground. Jalsah gained clear running rounding the home turn near the 300m.
Approaching the 200m, Glenkinchie had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Parisian Sunrise, which shifted in slightly.

Dutchy’s Lass shifted in and brushed the running rail near the 150m.

Approaching the winning post, Jalsah, which was making ground, had to be eased when tightened for room between Canconi and Sussuro, which shifted in slightly.

Near the winning post, G. Boss was obliged to stop riding his mount Lone Rock to avoid the heels of Cristallo which shifted in slightly.

L. Nolen (Miss Gai Flyer) said his mount, which over-raced in the early stages, raced quite ungenerously and in his view, may be better suited to drier tracks and also endeavour to ride it a little more quietly.

Subsequent to the race, a veterinary examination of Dutchy’s Lass revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr S. Dwyer advised Stewards that the filly would undergo a full veterinary check and that he would notify Stewards in due course of those results.
