DOUBLES ALL AROUND
By Graham Potter | Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Three jockeys - Larry Cassidy, Brett Evans and Jim Byrne - landed doubles at the meeting at Ipswich on Saturday. Each rider took out one of the three featured Listed races on the card (see separate stories of the wins of Our Lukas, Mitanni and Dorf Command). This is the WINNER FEEDBACK from their other three winners, Crossthestart (Byrne), Paymore (Evans) and Iguazu (Cassidy).
Ipswich Mile (1MW) Handicap - 1666m. Time:1-42.53. Track - Dead 4. Rail - True. 1 Crossthestart; 2 Plenty Of Practise; 3 Bellagio Wynn.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Jockey Jim Byrne: “Basically, we had a bit of an awkward draw. It was out intention not to slot away too early and hope there would be a little bit of a tempo. As it turned out they didn’t go that quick so around about the 900m ... 700m I started working forward on him. Everything else seemed to be waiting for the 500m so I was able to scoot around them pretty quickly and be within striking distance and pressing the leader by the time we hit the straight and then horse really accelerated nicely to the line. He has been unlucky his last couple ... you know, the horse just raced without any real luck. I always thought he could race really good today and thankfully he did."
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Crossthestart): 7.00 steady. Favourite (Bellagio Wynn): 3.00 out to 3.80. Finished third.
Ipswich Dash Plate (Class 6 - Set weights) - 1100m Track - Dead 4. Rail - True. 1 Paymore; 2 Attackum; 3 Feline Hunter.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “He was always going to get run off his legs early, which he did. I was just working into it nice and when we got the split into the race. I mean it was a tight run, but he was travelling good enough under me. When I asked him he was going to go through it ... and when he went through it he was home. He was home a long way out.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Paymore): 11.00 out to 15.00 in to 13.00. Favourite (Attackum): 2.50 out to 3.10. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Near the 900m True Flyer commenced to lay in placing Attackum in restricted room for a short distance. In the straight Attackum experienced a lot of trouble obtaining clear running and was not able to be properly tested out until after the 100m.
Provincial Cup Handicap (Open) - 2150m. Time:2-13.63. Track - Dead 4. Rail - True. 1 Iguazu; 2 Derivative Receipt; 3 Another Ali.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith: “I expected him to race well. His previous start here was a great win. He ran good sectionals and everything and he loves the distance, so I did expect him to run well. He has won three out of his last four starts now. Once he got up over a bit of ground he was alright, you know ... and it’s a bit of a start having Larry (Cassidy) on the way he is going at the moment.
“I’m not certain where he’ll go next. I might take him to Rocky for the Cup. You know he was battling around those provincials in Sydney. His form wasn’t that flash. But he was a 2000m horse and I managed to get him rolling. He has improved that much and when they improve so quickly you don’t know what they are capable of. So he has caught me a bit unaware the way he has improved. I said to owners he could be a nice horse next year, but he has just come to hand a bit quicker.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “Yeah, it makes it easier when you have a horse underneath you that is capable, you know. Like he travelled ... they went very fast and I was happy to sort of come off the speed and get into a nice spot. We thought we would be up third or fourth but they went very hard so we were back seventh or something. I was happy to be there because they were flying. I did get a little bit worried because the horse I was following at the 700m wasn’t really going anywhere, so when we got to the 600m to sort of slip up around them quick with a mid-race move going to the turn.
“That just put him straight back onto the bridle. Coming to the turn I was a bit worried again because he pricked his ears and he was shying at everything. That’s why I kept riding him. But ... yeah, he is a handy horse ... a nice stayer. I think he can develop into very good stayer. He is still a little bit immature, I think. As a later four-year-old, he could be something."
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Iguazu): 7.00 in to 5.00. Favourite (Rezyana): 2.80 out to 3.30. Finished ninth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: J. Taylor (Rezyana) said that his mount travelled well in the run but when Iguazu improved quickly near the 700m he was unable to go with it and from thereon he thought Rezyana was well beaten and the horse just plodded to the line. He thought the run was flat and reported this opinion to the connections after the race. A post race veterinary examination of Rezyana failed to reveal any abnormalities.
