MV SEPT 24 - JOLIE BRISE BOUNCES BACK TO THE WINNERS STALL
By Taron Clarke | Sunday, September 26, 2010
Moonee Valley, September 24, 2010. Track - Good 3. Rail - Out 3m. Penetrometer 4.63. 3YO + Fillies and Mares Handicap - 1600m. Time: 1-38.25. 600m Sectional: 34.75. (Carrying 54kg). 1 Jolie Brise; 2 River Bypass; 3 With Decorum. Margins: 0.2L x 3.25L.
Pat Hyland’s promising mare Jolie Brise was able to make a successful return to the winner’s stall in the second event at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Out of form since a slashing fourth placing in the 2009 Thousand Guineas behind Irish Lights, the bay mare was able to respond to a copybook James Winks ride.
After only one run over the summer months due to a sustained virus, Jolie Brise resumed with a fifth placing behind I’m a Hussy over 1100 metres and a last start seventh behind Avienus in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes over the mile.
Third up over the mile looked ideal for the talented mare and punters sent the Fastnet Rock sired galloper out as a firming favourite.
From the favourable barrier draw of three, Winks settled the mare down in fifth position, some six lengths off the leader, Tasmania visitor With Decorum. Immediately on his inside was the Luke Oliver trained River Bypass.
With Decorum was well rated in front by Craig Newitt and the field bunched up appreciably approaching the 600 metre mark.
Winks brought the favourite three and four wide approaching the turn in an effort to gain momentum and the pair surged towards the leaders. This was a winning move as Michael Rodd and River Bypass were committed to staying on the fence behind the leading trio.
In the early part of the straight Jolie Brise raced out to a length margin over With Decorum and a further length back to River Bypass who was coming off her back after being held up rounding the home turn.
The Pat Hyland trained mare held a length and a half margin over River Bypass at the 100 metre mark, however the later was starting to lengthen stride and charge.
River Bypass loomed large over the concluding stages but Jolie Brise and James Winks held enough stamina up their sleeves to score a slender margin over the desperately unlucky River Bypass with Tasmanian mare With Decorum battling on stoutly for third.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Owner Bill Frost: “Pat has done a terrific job and it was a good ride from James (Winks).
“It was a big night for her because we lost her in the autumn due to a very serious lung virus which got mucked around a bit with trying to treat her.
“When she came back this time we lost another three weeks, so we were out of step.
“She is a really good mare and if she didn’t win tonight I was going to be really disappointed.
“She was fourth in the Thousand Guineas this time last year.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Jolie Brise): 2.80 out to 3.00 into 2.80. The winner was the favourite.
Horse to follow: River Bypass was held up for clear running rounding the turn and into the early part of the straight. The chestnut mare by Skalato looks to be suited by a rise in distance and will no doubt figure in some of Victoria’s country cups over the coming months.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Holloway Castle (NZ) was slow to begin.
J Winks (Jolie Brise) was issued with a severe reprimand for permitting his mount to shift in near the 300m when not fully clear of Golden Charmer which got its head up and had to be eased.
After passing the 400m River Bypass was held up for clear running until approaching the home turn near the 200m.
L Nolen (Ocean Dream) was of the view that the mare would be better suited when stepped up in distance.
