CAUL OCT 09 - SOLAR CHARGED POWERS HOME

By Taron Clarke | Monday, October 11, 2010

Caulfield, October 9, 2010.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True. Penetrometer 5.28.
Thoroughbred Club Stakes 3YO Fillies SW+P (Group 3) - 1200m.
Time: 1-22.23. 600m Sectional: 35.42. (Carrying 56.5kg).
1 Solar Charged; 2 Jesse’s Girl; 3 Dance of the Ocean.
Margins: 4.3L x 0.1L.

Sydney based trainer John O’Shea’s top three year old filly Solar Charged made a long awaited return to the winners stall in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes over 1200 metres at Caulfield on Saturday.

After getting on her wrong leg in her first Victorian start at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago, champion Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller had the daughter of Charge Forward running freely from the get-go.

From their wide barrier of twelve, Rawiller and Solar Charged raced straight to the front and were never headed at any stage of the 1200 metre scamper.

Magic Millions winner Military Rose was expected to improve back on a firm surface and was sent out favourite for the event. Michael Rodd settled the General Nediym filly down in second placing, two lengths behind the flying Solar Charged.

Solar Charged railed like a greyhound into the straight and jockey Nash Rawiller was sitting pretty coming to the 300 metre mark.

Shaken up beyond the 300 metres, Solar Charged went into overdrive and bounded three and four lengths in front of Shiny And New and Jesse’s Girl, making ground through the ruck, but the Charge Forward filly raced well clear. Military Rose could not go on with it and dropped out of contention.

Solar Charged careered away to win by an ever widening four and a quarter lengths over the consistent Jesse’s Girl and a short head away to Dance of the Ocean in third.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer John O’Shea: “Obviously she's always been a very talented filly. She seems to get on very well with Nash (Rawiller) as well.

“She has just done very, very well in the last seven days at home, so we came here hoping she would run a much better race.

“When they've got an excuse you just cop it and move on, and try and rectify it. It's when you don't have an excuse you feel a little bit flat and we just had to get her on the right leg and get her happy in Melbourne.

“She's got happy in Melbourne and as a result has got on the right leg.

“The other thing about her is she travels so quickly and when you run along at sub 35 seconds it's hard to keep your momentum but Nash did a very, very good job and kept her rolling today and it was an impressive effort by the horse and rider.

“I was always confident she could run 1200 metres ridden the right way and she did it today.

“I'll have a sit down with Peter (Horwitz) and give some consideration to the options. Obviously the opportunity to run in a Group 1 race on Derby Day has some merit … but we'll see how she pulls up.”

Jockey Nash Rawiller: “Beautiful filly.

“She was very stiff the day she got beat when I rode her at Warwick Farm. She ran along, good sectionals, and being a bit fresh she was just left a bit vulnerable in the last 50m.

“I think it was Parables, one of Snowden's good horses, that was just able to pip her on the line.

“She just got in a lovely rhythm today and she was really always going to let down good.

“She's as good as we've got in Sydney, she's very fast.
“She's got a beautiful cruising speed and I think she's best when she's allowed to use that and enjoy it and that's what she did today.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Solar Charged): 7.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite Military Rose 3.50 in to 3.00. Finished tenth.

Horse to follow: Solar Charged lead throughout to score an emphatic victory. Clearly suited by the distinct bias favouring those in front on the fence, Rawiller gave the filly a beautiful run in transit and made sure she was on the right leg before asking her to extend.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Across The Moon shifted in abruptly at the start hampering Charming Sophie and Sheila’s Star.

Near the 700m Shiny And New got unbalanced after making contact with the hindquarters of Across The Moon when taken out by Lone Rock which was over-racing.

A post-race veterinary examination of Lone Rock revealed the filly to have atrial fibrillation and trainer Mr R Smerdon was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness together with the satisfactory results of an ECG before and after a 1000m gallop are required prior to Lone Rock racing again.

J Winks (Noetic) reported after the race that his mount felt very awkward in its action and for that reason he did not ride it out to end of the race.

A veterinary examination after the race revealed no abnormalities other than a slower than normal recovery.

L Nolen (Flokkati) could not offer any real excuses for the disappointing performance today other than he suspects she may race best when kept fresh.

M Rodd (Military Rose) explained that his mount travelled very well until straightening and in his view the filly does not handle racing in the anti-clockwise direction and the trainer Mrs G Heinrich indicated that the filly would return to Queensland.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities other than a slower than normal recovery and a swab sample was taken for analysis.
