SCST OCT 10 - SILVERBERG TOO STRONG ON DEBUT
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, October 13, 2010
Sunshine Coast, October 10, 2010. Track - Cushion. Maiden Plate (Set Weights) - 1000m. Time:1-00.10. Last 600: 35.62. 1 Silverberg; 2 Proud Ruler; 3 Lady Gower. Margins: Head; Short-half-head.
The Mark Palmer trained Silverberg scored a hard-fought win on debut when outgunning Proud Ruler and Lady Gower in a pressured finish to gain the decision by head.
The result was a more nail-biting affair than Palmer’s other winner for the weekend, Forest Redgum, who waltzed home by 4.50 lengths as a $4.60 favourite at Warwick on Saturday.
Silverberg was held out wide during the running, but covering extra ground did nothing to dent her finishing effort as she showed great commitment for a runner racing for the first time when fighting on strongly to the line.
The mare was green up the straight. She did shift in at the 200m where, according to the Stewards Report, she ‘inconvenienced’ the runner-up Proud Ruler. Proud Ruler’s jockey Mandy Radecker did take up her option to view the race video. After viewing the film Radecker decided to take no action against the winner.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Mark Palmer: “I just left it up to Stathi. I just said, see how it jumps and runs.
“I told him it had a bit of pace.
“Stathi said he was four deep and he was travelling strong … so it was good.
It’s great for the owners too. It was my first winner for the owners yesterday (when Forest Redgum won at Warwick) and today it was really good to get another one.
“I’ve only had her for about eight to ten weeks. I’ll have a look and see what is about for her.
“I’ll have a talk to Stathi (Katsidis) and see what he thinks. Yeah, we've got a few options now.
“I’m really enjoying in at Beaudesert. It’s a really good atmosphere. All the trainers there pitch in and help each other.”
Jockey Stathi Katsidis: “He was four deep the trip. Like it’s hard to know where the good going is on this track today.
“I sort of covered that much extra ground. It was a good tough win.
“Mark Palmer … great trainer … he thought it was a very good chance today. Look, it probably just needed it a little bit today, so I think it could well win again next time.
“All you can do is win first-up … and it will improve on that.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Silverberg): 5.00 steady Favourite (Tribulation): 3.00 out to 3.10. Finished fourth.
