CAUL OCT 13 - PREVENTABLE PROVIDES PATINACK WITH SOME CONSOLATION

By Taron Clarke | Friday, October 15, 2010

Caulfield, October 13, 2010.
Track - Heavy 8. Rail - True. Penetrometer 5.51.
Betfair Rating 0-89 Open Handicap - 1600m.
Time: 1-40.53. 600m Sectional: 38.36. (Carrying 53kg).
1 Preventable; 2 Willy Jimmy; 3 Viking Hero.
Margins: 0.4L x 0.8L.

Patinack Farm mare Preventable chalked up four consecutive wins with an impressive all the way romp at Caulfield on Wednesday.

After wins at Ballarat and Pakenham, Thompson stepped the brown mare out in midweek metropolitan company last start at Sandown where she scored an easy four and a half length win.

Thompson again raised the bar and Preventable more than justified the confidence of her trainer by leading all the way in the final event on Caulfield Thousand Guineas Day.

The win offered some consolation for trainer John Thompson and owner Nathan Tinkler, after the pair finished second earlier in the afternoon with Heartsareforlove, in the feature Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

Heartsareforlove's runners-up cheque was the fifth occasion in the last month that a Patinack Farm owned horse has run second in a Group 1 event.

Craig Newitt continued his association with the mare and the pair jumped away well from their midfield barrier draw.

Newitt wasted no time and sent the mare straight to the front rounding the first turn at the 1400 metre start.

Preventable and Newitt had an uncontested lead as they rolled through the first 600 meters unchallenged by two lengths over Sydney visitor Willy Jimmy.

Newitt slowed the speed inside the 1000 metre mark and allowed Preventable to catch her breath before the pair slipped three lengths in front rounding the home turn to greet the judge.

The entire field came off the bridle rounding the home turn in an attempt to make ground on the leader.

Jockey Newitt slipped a sustained look over his left shoulder at the infield screen before asking his mount to lengthen inside the 300 metre mark.

Preventable held a clear three length margin over Willy Jimmy and Viking Hero, who railed through along the inside going to run to a clear third.

Preventable got a little leg weary over the concluding stages of the event, but did enough in the run to the line to hold off the late finish of Willy Jimmy by a long neck with three quarters of a length back to Viking Hero in third.

The placegetters streeted the remainder of the field. There was six lengths back to the fourth placed horse, Wookah.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer John Thompson: “She's got a bit of confidence with a few wins up the line there.

“It was a good, tough win today. She rolled along a bit there on the crappy track and the second horse had the trail on her and had the last shot at her, but she got the job done.

“There is plenty of opportunities in Victoria's for horses like this mare. They race every day and it's fantastic.

“There's a mares race on Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley so we might have a look at that, but we'll see how she pulls up.

“She obviously had a tough run there, so no decision will be made today.

“The team are doing a great job. Full credit to them. Let’s keep it rolling.”

Jockey Craig Newitt: “She's absolutely flying this time in.
“She won really good on the wet before she went to Sandown. She won really impressive on the dry and she came here today and met a lot stronger field.

“She wanted to go a little bit keen up over the hill down the back, but she's got a high cruising speed, a good turn of foot, gets through the wet and she stuck on really good.

“She's a mare in form and we all know how that recipe works.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Preventable): 3.50 in to 3.40.
The winner was the favourite.

Horse to follow: Viking Hero did enough on the unsuitable surface to suggest he will be competitive in middle distance races over the spring.

Bred on stout staying bloodlines, the Mike Moroney trained gelding will only improve as the distances increase.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Seguro (NZ) was a late withdrawal at 10.30am on veterinary advice and trainer Mr B Jenkins will submit a veterinary certificate in respect of it.

Stewards acceded to requests from trainers Mr T O’Sullivan and Mr D O’Brien to withdraw Poised to Win and Cyclone Al due to the downgrade of the track. Poised to Win was subsequently withdrawn at 12.11pm and Cyclone Al at 2.40pm.

Devils Force jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1000m Colonial Boy shifted in and made contact with Willy Jimmy.

Tom’s Rocket raced wide without cover throughout.

L Nolen rider of Colonial Boy, which performed poorly, advised the gelding failed to handle today’s track conditions.

N Rawiller stated that Devils Force did not handle the track conditions today.

G Boss was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted on Chilled By Choice after leaving the 600m.
He stated that he was instructed to ride for luck and stay close to the fence and near the 500m elected to follow Wookah through as he felt that gelding would take him further into the race rather than make ground wider on the track.

G Boss further added that whilst he was held up behind Wookah until the entrance to the straight Chilled By Choice only ran home fairly.

G Boss added that his mount did not make any ground on Wookah over the concluding stages

Trainer Mr R Cameron confirmed the instructions and advised that the stable had supported the gelding today.

G Boss’s explanation was noted.
