THE DAVID HAYES INTERVIEW

By Darren Winningham | Friday, April 25, 2025

IT COULD BE A VERY BIG DAY FOR THE HAYES FAMILY ON SUNDAY. HRO'S WINNO CAIGHT UP WITH DAVID HAYES

WINNO: “I’m with David Hayes, trainer of the Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising. Mate, Barrier 4 … you must be happy.”

DH: If I could have chosen it … that would be the barrier I would have chosen.”

Winno: “So, moving forward to Sunday, in terms of any work still left t do.”

DH: “Most of the work is done. He'll still do a little bit of striding work … and then straight into the race.”

WINNO: “The other thing for you on Sunday, on a personal level, being father of the boys coming over with Mr Brightside … it could be a massive day for the Hayes family on Sunday.”

DH: “Yeah, I think that would probably give me one of my biggest thrills. Even though I'm not training him. I just know how important he is to the boys and for that old horse to get international tick, it would be the cream on the cake of an incredible career.”

WINNO: ”He’s drawn very well … will probably race in the top four or five?”

DH: “I would say so. He's been there the rabbit in the last couple of runs from wide gates. He's hit the front of the 400. I would say Craig (Williams) won't be hitting the front till well into the straight and that makes him very hard to beat. That's when he really wins … when he gets that sort of run.”

WINNO: “Well, good luck on Sunday. Hopefully the Hayes family can set some records and claim a piece of history in Hong Kong.”

DH: “Wouldn’t that be nice.”

WINNO: “And last but not least, beyond Sunday, the million dollar question … The Everest … a genuine target?”

DH: “Oh yeah, absolutely. If he’s healthy, he’ll be coming down to Australia for The Everest. I think in the current betting market he is $2.50. It is the richest turf race in the world. I’d love to bring the champion back home.”
