MOREIRA HAS LOST NONE OF HIS MAGIC

Joao “The Magic Man” Moreira made a statement on FWD Champions Day winning the last two races with superb rides.

He rode the Casper Fownes trained Family Jewel who was resuming in race nine. On the point of the home turn, he was hard up against the rail with nowhere to go. It seemed the short-priced favourite was doomed. Then the “magic” occurred – somehow Moreira managed to get free and storm away to win impressively.

The final race on Champions Day saw several runners heavily supported late. Moreira was aboard the Frankie Lor trained Everyone’s Star who snuck along the rail in a masterly ride to post a long overdue win.

Moreira is a four-time champion jockey in Hong Kong winning the premierships in 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and then again in 2020/21. He now has ridden 1237 winners in Hong Kong and won numerous Group 1 feature races.

He has been riding recently in Japan – however, has been travelling around the world looking for international glory. He is off to Kentucky to ride in the Kentucky Derby this week.

With Moreira having no real place to call home now and his transient activities around the world – one may ponder – will he return to Hong Kong to pursue another champion jockey season?
