WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN 10 000 DAY

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, May 15, 2025

DOOMBEN this week featuring the Group 1 LADBROKES DOOMBEN 10,000.

The track is rated “HEAVY”. The rail is in the true position. There is scattered rain and showers forecast in the lead up to the races and more on the day of racing – I expect we will again be on a wet track again this week. Looks like an ordinary weather period for the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

A BM85 race over 1650 metres to start us off – tough race with many chances.

Space Age (7) from the Ciaron Maher yards with a claim for Cody Collis looks well placed. Loves a wet track.

Last start winner Piraeus (17) is trained by Richard & Will Freedman and Tim Clark remains in the saddle. He goes up in grade but down in weight – he looks well placed here as well. If he handles a heavy surface, he is right in the race.

Selections:

7 – Space Age
17 – Piraeus
6 – Shihab
4 – Fukubana
Rough chances – (2) Victory Win and (9) Demon Darb and (13) Scalextrics

Race 2

A BM78 race over 1350 metres.

Jealous (16), trained by Robert Heathcote, loves wet tracks. Is second up with Rachel King aboard. Is drawn well and is undefeated second up – great odds as well.

Deep Respect (2) resumed with a solid effort. He just seemed to peak late on his fitness. Expect the Kelly Schweida runner to be cherry ripe for this assignment – JAG will ride her again.

Selections:

16 –Jealous
2 – Deep Respect
6 – Ocean Alps
10 – Winsome Star
Rough chance – (4) En Pointe & (14) Banana Slide

Race 3

A three-year-old race over 1350 metres.

Munce Racing could upset the interstate visitors here. The stable has been firing in recent weeks.

Ruins Of Rome (7) will be ridden by Martin Harley. He won first up on a heavy bog track here over 1200 metres, then stepped up in grade and was finishing on the heels – storming home late over 1300 metres at Eagle Farm. I think the heavy track will make this race seem like 1500 metres and this should suit him.

The stable mate is Pierata’s Gem who won last time out and survived a protest – was huge odds as well. She has some good form on soft surfaces and, despite drawing poorly, gets in well here. Jamie Melham will ride.

Selections:

7 – Ruins Of Rome
10 – Pierata’s Gem
2 – Goodlucktome
1 – Pisces
Rough chance – (8) El Morzillo

Race 4

A Listed class race over 1600 metres.

Gollan Racing, fresh off some massive wins at the Gold Coast last weekend, has solid representation here.

Last start winners Rising Pacific (7) and Tenzing (4) look well placed.

Rising Pacific (7) drops back in distance from 1835 metres to the mile – Andrew Mallyon retains the ride. He has no real exposed wet weather form – however, he keeps on winning and loves the mile. I like him – he looks progressive.

Tenzing (4) won over the mile at his last start. Has solid form on soft surfaces and at this distance. Regan Bayliss retains the ride.

Selections:

7 – Rising Pacific
4 – Tenzing
2 – Al Mubhir
5 – Cosmic Vega
Rough chance – (3) Mighty Ulysses

Race 5 SEVEN SPIRIT OF BOOM CLASSIC – GROUP 2

A Group 2 race over 1200 metres – for the two-year-old runners.

Keep your eye on the marker for any market movers.

I like the Chris Waller Racing runner – United States (7). Won a recent trial – a gear change with the tongue tie going on – has drawn well with the World Best Jockey aboard – James McDonald. Whatever he does here this weekend – follow him into the Carnival – I think he will jag a Group 1 win over the BRC Winter Carnival.

Team Hawkes trains Gallo Nero (2) with Tyler Schiller riding. Had no luck in the Magic Millions and returns to racing after a 17-week spell. A very solid trial two weeks ago on a soft track – looks very forward and could be hard to hold out.

The local Grafterburners (1), trained by Kelly Schweida, resumed and won The Jewel on the Gold Coast. A nine week freshen up and a recent strong trial – should again be right in it at the finish – Jason Collett rides.

Torque To Be Sure (4) was defeated over 1000 metres first up when heavily supported. The Matthew Dunn Racing colt will strip fitter for that run and will be suited by a wet track and the increased distance. Andrew Mallyon retains the ride.

Selections:

7 – United States
2 – Gallo Nero
1 – Grafterburners
4 – Torque To Be Sure
Rough chances – (10) Namaste & (13) Farnicle

Race 6 JRA CHAIRMANS HANDICAP - GROUP 3

First leg of the Quaddie. A Group 3 race over 2000 metres.

Sir Delius (1) is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. A newcomer to the stable from overseas having his first run in Australia. Tim Clark will ride. Resumes here after 31 weeks off racing. Has been solid in recent trials. Will need to be at his best with the big weight on a heavy track.

Mark Zahra rides Immediacy (3) for the Busuttin and Young stables. Has won his past two starts over this distance in Victoria – his last win was at Caulfield. He has won on a soft track – but no exposed heavy form.

Floating (5), trained by Matthew Smith, is probably the best wet weather runner here. Loves it wet! Jason Collett will ride – solid effort last time out over a mile – the extra distance will suit.

Keep the Bjorn Baker runner Alegron (2) safe as well. He could upset them at massive odds with Rachel King riding.

Selections:

3 – Immediacy
5 – Floating
1 – Sir Delius
2 – Alegron
Rough chance – (6) Nereus

Race 7 MAGIC MILLIONS BRIGHT SHADOW – LISTED

First leg of the Treble. A Listed race over 1110 metres.

There is plenty of speed in the race.

In Flight (2) is trained by Joseph Pride. Was a gallant second last time out at Hawkesbury over 1100 metres on a heavy track. Will be better for that run and is drawn perfectly here in barrier 2 with Jason Collett to ride.

Kin (3) is a Godolphin runner With James McDonald to ride. Was third in the same race as In Flight (3) at Hawkesbury. He goes up in weight for that last start effort and really does not have any exposed wet weather form - I would not be taking silly odds about this runner.

Munce Racing has Navyonthehighway (7) second up here with Tommy Berry riding. This runner is undefeated second up and loves the Doomben track with four starts here for three wins. She is drawn well and has won on a heavy track. The stable is in form – there has been plenty of money early for this runner – probably too good not to follow the money trail here.

Liquor (4) is trained locally by Tony Gollan with Angela Jones to continue her association with this runner. She will jump the gates, put herself forward and try to run them ragged over the short distance. She has had a four week freshen up since her last start. Has solid form on soft surfaces with no exposed form on heavy tracks - take on trust at the big odds of around $21.

There is one here that I like, good odds - probably aptly named as well - Left Field (13). The mare is trained by Brad Widdup with Rachel King to ride. She is down in the weights and up in class but her two recent trials have been solid, and she will carry no weight. She has some good form on wet surfaces - I expect her to be storming home late - big odds as well at around $21.

Selections:

2 – In Flight
3 – Kin
7 – Navyonthehighway
13 – Left Field
Rough chance – (5) Midnight In Tokyo & (4) Liquor

Race 8 LADBROKES DOOMBEN 10,000 – GROUP 1

The feature race on the program – the 2025 LADBROKES DOOMBEN 10,000 over 1200 metres.

The heavy surface has a dramatic impact on this race.

Jedibeel (10) is trained by Brad Widdup. He did everything but win the Group 2 Victory Stakes last time out when he got nailed on the post late by the $71 chance Libertad (9). He has solid form on wet tracks and I expect, from barrier 3, this weekend he will be perfectly positioned throughout the run by jockey Tyler Schiller – again at $10 is super value.

Schwarz (2) is trained by the O’Shea & Charlton stables. He resumes after winning the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley last time out. He has had a seven week freshen up since that victory, however has been performing very well in two recent trials which he has won - the latest he won on a heavy track showing that he will handle the surface that is on offer. Craig Williams will ride him for the first time.

Benedetta (14) is trained by Jason Warren and Jamie Melham will ride the mare. An important gear change with the blinkers going on for this run. She comes off a seven week freshen up where, at her last start in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over 1400 metres, she got caught up in traffic and really never had a fair crack at them in the straight. In saying that I think the horse is a better proposition over the 1200 metres which she seems to thrive at - if you look at his racing record and victories. She has adequate wet weather form as well to hold her in good stead for this race.

The Neasham Racing team has Sunshine In Paris (12) in the race with James McDonald on top. She has been very well supported since the markets have opened and now is the pre post favourite for the race. She has solid form in Group one races however I just think she will struggle on a heavy surface - I think her odds that are on offer as well as ridiculous and I think you should play wide.

Selections:

10 – Jedibeel
2 – Schwarz
14 – Benedetta
12 – Sunshine In Paris
Rough chance – (1) Overpass & (2) Mazu

Race 9 ROUGH HABIT PLATE – GROUP 3

The last race of the day – hopefully the track holds up and the rain stays away.

A Group 3 race over 2000 metres.

The Chris Waller Racing filly looks well placed – Belle Detelle (14) with James McDonald riding. She was successful in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes over 2000 metres before stepping up to the Group 1 Australian Oaks. Maybe the 2400 metres of the Oaks was a big challenge so early in her career. Look for a massive improvement here down in class and back to 2000 metres.

The top weight is Firm Agreement (1) trained by Annabel Neasham Racing. Was second in the AJC Derby – Group 1. Then well supported in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate where he ran second to Shangri La Spring (2). Tyler Schiller will ride.

Shangri La Spring (2 is a Waterhouse & Bott runner – Tim Clark to ride. Was sent out an easing favourite in the QLD Guineas – Group 2 over the mile. Will strip fitter for that effort and will be better back at 2000 metres.

King Of Thunder (3) is trained by O’Shea & Charlton – with Mark Zahra riding. Has had a seven week freshen up. His recent trial on a heavy track suggests that he is ready to show something here.

Selections:

14 – Belle Detelle
1 – Firm Agreement
2 – Shangri La Spring
3 – King Of Thunder
Rough chance – (8) Liberty Park & (10) Croupier

Jockey Challenge

Looks like a race between Tyler Schiller, James McDonald and Jason Collett. Depending on what happens with the scratchings maybe Tyler Schiller could get the job done.

WINNO misses FLEMO!

Just like to remind him that we love him!

Plus, how good – BULLDOGS on top of the NRL ladder. State of Origin 2025 is close – NSW to reign supreme.
