RED WAVE SEEKING A PIECE OF IPSWICH CUP HISTORY

By Graham Potter | Friday, June 20, 2025

REMEMBER WHEN

RED WAVE SCORES A THRILLING IPSWICH CUP WIN

THE IPSWICH CUP - A WINNING CELEBRATION THAT WAS HEARD AS FAR AWAY AS MACKAY

NOW IT IS ON TO THE NEXT CHAPTER

Red Wave is no ordinary member of the Tony and Maddysen Sears stable setup.

The six-year-old son of Red Dazzler holds a very special place in their hearts, particularly that of Maddy Sears, whose love for the horse has been there for all to see on many occasions at the track, not least after his win in last year’s edition of the Ipswich Cup.

On Saturday Red Wave will try to claim his own piece of history when he set out to make it back-to-back wins in the Ipswich Cup.

The difficulty inherent in that challenge is underlined by the fact that the ONLY horse to achieve that distinction in Ipswich Cup, as shown in the Club records dating back to 1930, was the Robert Heathcote trained Our Lukas who won the event in 2009 and 2010.

Heathcote was the first trainer to have back-to-back wins in the Ipswich Cup since Peter Moylan in 1985/86 so, in essence, it is a very rare outcome fir horse and trainer … but Team Seras and Red Wave are back for the challenge.

If Red Wave were to salute on Saturday, he would follow a familiar theme to Our Lukas in terms of the fact that his Ipswich Cup wins will be achieved with two different riders in the saddle.

Larry Cassidy and the late Stathi Katsidis were the riders who partnered Our Lukas to his Ipswich Cup double.

Angela Jones partnered Red Wave to that victory twelve months ago. This time Kyle Wilson Taylor has been handed the reins and the responsibility that goes with it. Just to add a little intrigue into the mix, Jones will ride Red Wave’s stable companion Poetic Drama in the big race.

When Red Wave won the race last year he carried 53kg. This year he has been set the task of carrying 58.5kg. Poetic Drama will carry 53.5kg.

In an open betting race, Diablo Bolt is the $5.50 favourite ahead of Osmose ($7). Poetic Drama is currently on the third line of betting at $7.50 while Red Wave is out at $21.
