FLEM NOV 04 - BRAZILIAN PULSE STORMS HOME IN OAKS
By Taron Clarke | Friday, November 5, 2010
Flemington, November 4, 2010. Track - Slow 7. Rail - Out 6m. Penetrometer: 5.02. Crown Oaks (Group 1) 3YO Fillies SW - 2500m. Time: 2-41.64. 600m Sectional: 36.87. (Carrying 55.5kg). 1 Brazilian Pulse; 2 Shamrocker; 3 Placement. Margins: 0.8L x 2.0L
Bonny filly Brazilian Pulse managed to claim Group 1 glory in her very first campaign when scoring a crushing victory in Thursday’s Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks over 2500 metres.
Making just her sixth racetrack appearance, the daughter of Captain Rio has taken the quantum leap from winning a maiden at Ballarat in early September to winning the blue ribbon event for three-year-old staying fillies in one preparation.
Trained by Mike Moroney, the win gave the former kiwi based mentor his fourth Oaks win, his first at Flemington.
The win by the filly complemented the trainer’s victory in last year’s VRC AAMI Derby with Monaco Consul, who was later unplaced in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Jockey of the Flemington Carnival Craig Williams maintained his association with the lightly raced filly and the victory gave him his second VRC Oaks success after winning the 2006 rendition aboard the short priced favourite Miss Finland for trainer David Hayes.
Brazilian Pulse became the 34th filly to complete the Wakeful Stakes-Oaks double after Moroney’s brother Paul purchased the bay filly for NZ$26,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock 2009 Karaka Select Yearling Sale from the Raffles Farm draft.
Moroney will now spell the filly and take aim at a potential Sydney Autumn Carnival which will see Brazilian Pulse start her campaign in Melbourne.
Brazilian Pulse beat the Danny O’Brien trained Shamrocker by three-quarters of a length with a further two lengths back to Placement in third.
Brazilian Pulse has now had six starts for four wins and two minor placing’s and the win takes her stakes earnings to just shy of $900,000.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Mike Moroney: “It's great. It's the right course to be doing it on and just great for the owners.
“Rupert and Cheryl Legh have really supported me all the way through and they introduced me to Rohan (Aujard). Rohan's put a lot of money in and to think that we could win a Group 1 with a filly like this … who is probably down the bottom end of the ones that he's bought too.
“She's a lovely filly. It's a great credit to her. I think if you see her at the gates … she just stood there and never moved a muscle. She's got a great brain and very mature for her age. I thought it was a very strong win.
“Paul (Moroney) bought her as a yearling and we had owners for her and they changed their minds. They rang me up, so I rang Rohan. We'd just sold one of his fillies, Princess Pulse, and he decided to replace her with this filly. It was a good replacement.
“It's the first time Johnny (O'Neill) has been in, but he's a very lucky owner so maybe he's brought the luck.
“She was educated in New Zealand. They did a great job. They always thought she was a good filly.
“She'd had one barrier trial in New Zealand as a late two-year-old. We spelled her there … brought her back and let her acclimatise and started from her. Certainly it's been a combination of both stables.
“Craig (Williams) got the ride the way it went with suspensions and with Michael (Rodd) … he's stable rider for the Kavanaghs so he had to stick with the other horse (Kittens). She's a lovely filly and easy to ride, so we were never worried about that. “We won’t look too far ahead. We'll just get through the autumn first. I think we'll start off here first but I'd love to think we can get to Sydney for the autumn as well.
Jockey Craig Williams: “It's a huge thrill to win the Crown Oaks.
“I've had a really good carnival and won't begrudge anything. It’s great to take out one of the major Group 1s in the Crown Oaks with Brazilian Pulse, which comes from a maiden win to an Oaks victory.
“She's very similar to Miss Finland. I know she hasn't dominated like a Miss Finland, but I can't wait to see her in the autumn.
“She's done everything now in the spring and to win the Oaks the way she did today … she's a class filly.
“I went back and watched the replay of Saturday’s win and think I was a bit tough on myself that day. I was pretty happy with the way I rode her. I just rode her comfortable and confident and you could see that she backed up well today.
“She makes me look really good and she's enjoyable to ride.
“She got her head up and over-raced over the back there. We just tried to keep it as smooth as possible, which was when she just got a little bit keen.
“That just shows a little bit of immaturity, but then when there was a really nice gallop up, I was happy with the horse in front of me and she just was able to roll, She's definitely a better chaser……It just shows you the win was full of merit.
BEATEN JOCKEY FEEDBACK: 2nd – James Winks (Shamrocker): “It was a very good run. She just kept on grinding.”
3rd – Ben Melham (Placement): “She ran very well, but the last furlong (200m) found her out.”
4th – Michael Rodd (Kittens): “She was very honest. She just keeps trying and will be better next season.”
5th – Corey Brown (Sasa): “She just pulled too hard. I couldn't get her to settle.”
6th – Nash Rawiller (Shezaten): “She ran terrific, but has a lot of maturing to do. Maybe the AJC Oaks will suit her in the autumn.”
7th – Dwayne Dunn (Maraseem): “She ran terrific. Probably needs a spell now.”
8th – Brad Rawiller (Precious Lorraine): “Didn't handle the ground. I'm sure she'll go better on top of the ground.”
9th – Nick Hall (Dizlago): “She received some bumps early and then didn't run on.”
10th – Michelle Payne (Yosei): “She just didn't stay the trip.”
11th – Craig Newitt (Heartsareforlove): “Had every chance, but she didn't stay.”
12th – Hugh Bowman (Speed Of Dark): “She was never in the hunt.” PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Brazilian Pulse): 3.00 out to 3.20 into 3.00. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Shamrocker (NZ) was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon after arriving on course and was passed fit to run.
On jumping away Kittens shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of Brazilian Pulse (NZ) resulting in Brazilian Pulse (NZ) shifting in and crowding Precious Lorraine which in turn forced Dizlago in across the heels of Maraaseem resulting in Dizlago having to be eased.
Also at the start Speed Of Dark shifted out and made heavy contact with Yosei.
Approximately 100m after the start Placement (NZ) lost its rightful running when tightened for room between Shamrocker (NZ) and Maraaseem which did shift in away from Brazilian Pulse (NZ) which was shifting in when not fully clear.
Stewards were satisfied that the manner in which Maraaseem shifted in and away from Brazilian Pulse (NZ) had contributed to the incident but nonetheless C Williams (Brazilian Pulse (NZ)) was issued with a severe reprimand for failing to leave sufficient room for runners to his inside.
As a result of Placement (NZ) losing its position it then shifted out bumping Dizlago out onto Precious Lorraine which had to be checked to avoid the heels of Sasa.
Sasa, which was caught wide without cover, made a mid-race move to cross and lead near the 1600m.
Passing the 800m Precious Lorraine was unable to improve its position when held up behind Shamrocker (NZ) and then got unbalanced when tightened for room after passing the 700m between Dizlago and Placement (NZ) which shifted out. Precious Lorraine eventually gained clear running passing the 400m.
Approaching the 600m Precious Lorraine was again tightened for room between Dizlago and Placement (NZ) which shifted out. B Melham was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
Post race veterinary examinations of Heartsareforlove and Speed Of Dark revealed no abnormalities.
