FLEM NOV 02 - JERSEY LILY GETS JUST REWARD

By Taron Clarke | Thursday, November 4, 2010

Flemington, November 2, 2010.
Track - Slow 6. Rail - Out 3m. Penetrometer: 4.83.
Herald Sun Stakes (Listed) 4YO+ Mares SW+P - 1400m.
Time: 1-22.73. 600m Sectional: 35.97. (Carrying 53kg).
1 Jersey Lily; 2 Happy Hippy; 3 Valentine Miss.
Margins: 1.3L x 1.7L

Sydney based trainer Les Bridge credited his consistent mare Jersey Lily’s win in the Listed Herald Sun stakes to a drop in grade after racing against better credentialed mares such as Beaded, Melito and company.

After an eye catching second behind Group 1 winning mare Culminate in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes over the Caulfield Cup Carnival, Jersey Lily was sent out well supported in the market at 5.50.

The favourite for the event was the Gai Waterhouse trained Devils Arcade on the back of four consecutive wins in restricted grade and a last start second behind Hidden Wonder in the Listed Belle of the Turf Stakes at Gosford.

It was Jersey Lily’s day as she came from well back to score a one and a quarter length win over Happy Hippy with a length and three quarters back to Valentine Miss.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Les Bridge: “Her record is not that flash because we've tried to win a good fillies race with her and she's met good fillies.
“In Sydney she run second to Beaded two or three times and she met Melito and all those sort of fillies and they had about a length, length and a half on her … but she's blossomed since she's come down here.

“Flemington's a big track that suits her. Today was perfect.

“We just thought we'd try a good Melbourne jockey and he was the first one we tried and he said he'd ride her … that was it.”

Jockey Craig Williams: “She's a lovely mare to ride and she really put the writing on the wall when I rode her last time at Caulfield on a heavy track.

“It was sheer ability and determination that got her so far through the ground, but today on a nicer track suited.
“She just gave me a great feel. She took control a long way out. I was that confident on her where I was and I just asked her to kick a hell of a long way out and she reaffirmed my confidence in her and her strength.

“She was very dominant today.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Jersey Lily): 5.00 out to 5.50.
Favourite (Devils Arcade): 4.60 out to 5.50 into 4.80. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
An application was made by registered rider agent Mr R Horowitz regarding a dispute over the rider engagement for Kryptelon in this particular race.

Mr Horowitz explained that he had accepted the ride for his client J Winks on October 10, the day after the mare’s previous start.

Evidence was also taken from the trainer Mr D Kelly in the presence of P Hammersley who had been declared to ride Kryptelon today.

Stewards, acting under the provisions of AR8LL, ruled on the evidence that J Winks was entitled to a losing and/or winning percentage and that P Hammersley remain as the declared rider.

Take All Of Me was held up rounding the home turn and for some distance in the early stages of the straight before gaining clear running near the 300m.

Inside the final 50m Pagan Princess got unbalanced after being bumped by Returntosender after both horses shifted ground slightly.

During the running of the race Kryptelon lost its off-fore plate, Valentine Miss lost its off-hind plate, Little Surfer Girl lost its near-fore plate, Happy Hippy lost its near-hind plate and Pagan Princess lost its off-fore plate.

An inquiry was adjourned into P Hammersley’s (Kryptelon) whip use prior to the 100m to a date to be fixed.
