LIGHTY RACED MISS FORCE UPSTAGES HER OLDER RIVALS

The Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership was happy to send the three-year-old filly Miss Force to town for only her second career start and their judgement proved to be spot on when the daughter of Cosmic Force saluted by 0.21 lengths in a Maiden Plate over 1000m at Eagle Farm on August 13.
Miss Force had finished second on debut over 800m at Ipswich on July 17 under Nozi Tomizawa (after winning an earlier trial) and this time around the reins were handed to apprentice Cody Collis, with the advantage of his 2kg claim arguably being seen to good effect in the run to the line, in which Miss Force, who was on the fourth line of betting at $4.80) was able to ward off the challenge of the $3.10 favourite Meldubious.
As was the case at Ipswich, Miss Force showed electric gate speed to quickly surge into a clearcut early lead of just under three lengths.
When Collis settled the pace down midrace, the second favourite Immediate ($3.70) went up to try to apply pressure to Miss Force, but the hard-held, Sears trained runner continued on his way at a comfortable gallop to the home turn … and he held a length advantage over Immediate as the field straightened for home, with Meldubious poised to strike, just under three lengths behind the leader.
Immediate still threatened Miss Force until the 200m without being able to make up any significant leeway. Over the last 200m Miss Force now had the measure of Immediate, but Meldubious, who had taken time to go through his gears, was now gaining ground late with a late rattle that momentarily looked like it might carry the day, but Miss Force was brave, keeping on fighting to the line to put an important, early career win on the scoreboard. Franking the merit of Miss Force’s effort was the fact that Meldubious came out and won his next start … as did Immediate, who was rewarded for her game run with a third-place finish here.
Miss Force, as mentioned, can also be credited for beating older horses with both Meldubious and Immediate being four-year-olds.
