DOOM NOV 06 - INTERNAL REVENUE JUST TOO GOOD
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Doomben, November 6, 2010. Track - Dead 5. Rail - out 4.5m. Penetrometer: 5.3. QTIS Handicap (2yo’s - C&G) - 1020m. Time: 1-00.2 (Carrying 55.5kg). Last 600: 34.84. 1 Internal Revenue; 2 Ideal; 3 Racing Stripes. Margins: 2.75; 1.25.
The Gillian Heinrich trained Internal Revenue made good on the prediction of jockey Chris Munce by winning his second start in fluent fashion.
Munce had ridden the son of Exceed and Excel on debut. The horse was very new and did plenty wrong, but still managed a creditable third placing behind Flying Jet over 1000m at Eagle Farm two weeks before facing the starter here.
After that effort, Munce told the trainer that Internal Revenue would win second-up and the rider had the best view in town of watching that happen as Internal Revenue smashed his opposition to score with complete authority.
While Internal Revenue still had to do the work, things were made to order for the colt on the day.
Jumping from the number barrier was a huge advantage once Internal Revenue showed the gate speed to make use of his barrier draw.
That allowed Munce to give him the run of the race as he tracked the speed which was being set at a lively gallop by Ideal and Zed Man who chased out, eyeballing each other at the head of affairs, some three lengths ahead of Internal Revenue who was happy to take the trail.
With the two frontrunners committed to all out attack, the chances were that their early effort would leave them both vulnerable in the home stretch and Munce made certain Internal Revenue was perfectly placed to apply pressure as he switched his mount wider into clear running as the field straightened for home.
Ideal got the better of Zed Man coming through the 200m mark, but his solo lead was short-lived as Internal Revenue, who had gradually been making up ground, now pounced on Ideal, who simply had no answer to the challenge of the Heinrich trained runner who was strong all the way to the line as he stretched out to a decisive 2.75 length winning margin.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Gillian Heinrich: “Yeah, he was a little bit slow away in his first start and he was so green. He ran all over the place. It was just the natural improvement wasn’t it … from one start to another.
“They always improve from their first start and today he was that much more a professional racehorse.
“The barrier always helps. It most definitely does when you come from the one. They can follow the rail and come out at the end.
“He’s a Magic Million horse, so we’ll probably take it easy … take him to the beach for a couple of weeks. See how he pulls up and then see where we go from here.
“I trained the mare. You know you’re getting old when you can say that, don’t that. Yeah, the mare won a couple.
“We actually bred him. We put him through the sales rings, but didn’t get enough for him … so we took him home and I got to train him. It’s all good.”
Jockey Chris Munce: “Yeah, he benefitted from the race experience.
“I think he is a nice horse. I was very happy after the first run. I told Gillian (Heinrich) straight after I thought he would the win next start for her. I’m glad he did today.
“Like I said, he’s a nice horse. He’s a little pro … and I think he has got a bit of depth to him.
“The way he went past them in the end might have been a bit exaggerated. The two leaders went very, very fast. They had to give in the end … but my bloke, to his credit, he’s hit the line very well.
“I think he can keep stepping up the ladder. Obviously, two-year-old’s … they’re a little bit day to day, but he seems a tough little character. You know he is pretty tenacious, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he did go on with it.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Internal Revenue): 3.50 out to 3.60 in to 2.70. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Karl The Great (J. Piper) jumped away very awkwardly, shifting out and making contact with General Explorer (M. Cahill).
In this incident J. Piper became unbalanced.
A short distance subsequent to this General Explorer shifted out and bumped Racing Stripes (M. Wood).
August Bishop (L. Cassidy) and Tenacious Jack (B. Stewart) made contact on jumping away.
Near the 800m Karl The Great had to be checked when tightened for room by General Explorer, which shifted in and away from Racing Stripes.
As stewards were of the view that the racing manners of General Explorer had a major contribution to this incident, no direct action was taken.
August Bishop, Rocket To Glory (D. Simmons) and Peterhof (P. Wolfgram) raced wide throughout.
After passing the 600m Rocket To Glory was inclined to hang out and away from Peterhof and proved difficult to ride for a short distance.
Trainer J. Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on Rocket To Glory for its racing manners.
Apprentice M. Wood, the rider of Racing Stripes, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift in under riding when not sufficiently clear of Karl The Great, resulting in that runner having to be checked to avoid the heels of Racing Stripes.
Apprentice M. Wood's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 7 November, and expire following the Ipswich day meeting on Friday, 19 November 2010.
