RIGHT WHERE HE WANTS TO BE. IS THERE A MORE PASSIONATE HK RACING ENTHUSIAST THAN WINNO?
By Graham Potter | Friday, April 17, 2026
He is that keen he has got there a week early.
HRO’s Winno will once again, for the umpteenth time, be covering, not only the FWD Champions Day at Sha Tin on April 26, but the entire week’s buildup to what is always a spectacular day of racing at the highest level.
“I have covered racing from Cairns to Caulfield … and yes, let us not forget Grafton and Kilcoy … but when Hong Kong calls, you pack the cameras, grab the passport, and hope the bloke next to you on the plane does not snore and has used some deodorant,” said Winno.
“This marks my eleventh year flying the HRO Australia flag at FWD Champions Day (with 2022 the lone exception thanks to COVID restrictions).
“This year, FWD Champions Day is headlined by the world’s best sprinter … Ka Ying Rising, the rocket … and the mighty Romantic Warrior, the legend … and I will be right in the thick of it!
“I, along with the loyal HRO readers, are not going to miss a second of it.
“Touching down in Hong Kong, I felt that familiar jolt … part jet lag, part excitement, part “gee I hope my luggage made it,” continued Winno.
“The city is buzzing … neon, noise, movement, that amazing harbour … an amazing place that hits you the same way a Queensland summer does, straight on and without warning.
“Before settling into Hong Kong, I am cooling my heels with a few days in Macau, exploring the history, the food, and the city’s charm, before shifting across to Hong Kong to bring the best coverage possible to HRO Australia readers.
"A humble thanks again to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for, once again, granting media accreditation to HRO Australia.
"You can rest assured that, as always, I will be striving to deliver a wide range and a high quality of coverage deserving of that accreditation privilege."
