KARIS TEETAN AND KA YING RISING - TWO RIDES, TWO WINS - AN OFTEN FORGOTTEN STORY
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 23, 2026
Whilst the story line for the Ka Ying Rising juggernaut involves trainer David Hayes and Hong Kong’s best jockey Zac Purton there are some hidden stories that many forget.
Enter the quiet spoken Mauritian jockey Karis Teetan.
For Teetan, Ka Ying Rising is not just another name on the form guide. Theirs was a partnership in two of the most defining rides at the commencement of the long winning streak of Ka Ying Rising, the world’s best sprinter who will line up at Sha Tin on Sunday in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Group 1) – HK$24 million.
Teetan has ridden Ka Ying Rising on two occasions.
With Zac Purton injured in a race fall earlier in the month on February 9, Hayes looked for a suitable jockey to ride the superstar in what would be his tenth career win in a row. The race was the Queen’s Jubilee Cup (Group 1) in February 2025.
Enter Karis Teetan.
It was the opportunity of a lifetime and Teetan rode the superstar to perfection winning the race with dominance.
But the story didn’t start there. It began in June 2024, in the Sha Tin Vase (Group 3), when Teetan first felt what Ka Ying Rising had under the bonnet.
This race win turned out to be his career fourth win.
Looking back, that Vase run feels like the introduction. The moment Teetan realised he was not just riding a good horse — he was riding a special one.
Racing is full of victories, but only a handful become memories. These two did because they were not just about winning. They were about connection and about a jockey who understood a horse’s strengths before the rest of the world caught on.
For Ka Ying Rising, those wins were the early chapters in a story that is still being written.
