HALL BACK IN THE WINNERS’ ENCLOSURE

Sunshine Coast, Sunday June 21. Maiden Handicap - 1400m. Time: 1-27.25 Track - Cushion Track. 1 Coroner; 2 Sam's Crossing; 3 Mr Daybreak.
The Troy Hall trained Coroner looked the part here and duly obliged under a cool and calm ride from Damian Browne. The lightly raced two-year-old, who was taking on older horses, jumped well and settled fourth, three lengths behind leader City Limits. Coroner began to move forward at the 600m and by the time the frontrunners straightened for home, he had secured a lead that was never seriously challenged.
The only moment of slight concern came at the top of the straight, just before Coroner hit the lead, when Little Pigen threatened to push Coroner out wider on the track but Damian Browne quickly put that one back in a pocket. From there, Browne only had to keep his inexperienced mount’s mind on the job to carry the day.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Troy Hall: “Mate, it’s only his third start. We gave him time. He was an immature horse and we didn‘t want to run him until he was ready. First-up he was fair. His last run was a tremendous effort. He finished third behind Man Of Oar, who placed at Eagle Farm in a feature yesterday. They sort of built up momentum before he did in that race and they had that in their favour, but he was finishing off well. So he was due today and he won it comfortably. We are looking at a run over 1400m in Brisbane in a fortnight.” “Gino Loiero is one of the owners. He has a share in the stallion Dane Shadow, the sire of Coroner, and he put all of the horse’s owners into the game and gave me the horse to care for. I want to thank him for that.”
Jockey Damian Browne: “Of all the horses in the race, he had the best form. I just rode him accordingly. We got a really good run, and the horse was travelling very nicely. If anything we got there a little too soon.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Coroner): 1.70 out to 1.90 in to 1.80. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Approaching the 500m, Eff Three (R. Hurley) had to be checked to avoid the heels of the tiring Outback Diamond (J. Piper). Perseid (M. Heagney), which was following, was also inconvenienced as a consequence.
Leaving the 400m, Little Pigen (D. Craven) was tightened for room between Coroner (D. Browne) and City Limits (A. Pattillo), which hung out. Trainer D. Peoples was advised that a warning would be placed on City Limits regarding its racing manners.
A. Spinks, rider of Seeyou Seeyou, dropped his whip at the 200m. The connections of Outback Diamond which performed poorly, were advised that the gelding would not be permitted to race in provincial areas until it established form at country venues.
