DOUBLE FOR SPINKS AT THE SUNSHINE COAST
By Matthew Grimson | Wednesday, June 24, 2009
Jockey Andrew Spinks landed a double at the Sunshine Coast meeting on Sunday.
Sunshine Coast, Sunday, June 21. Class 5 Handicap - 1100m. Time: 1-07.03 Track - Cushion Track 1 Youcantseeme; 2 Felecia; 3 Al Fawzi
Youcantseeme jumped smartly and led briefly. Jockey Andrew Spinks was then content to ease back and take a sit just outside of Al Fawzi who kicked up along the inside.
These two runners held station, with Felicia also in close attendance two out, until turning for home. Youcantseeme then asserted his authority. He quickly dispatched the challenge of Al Fawzi, who weakened out of contention, and kicked on too strongly for the hard chasing Felicia who finished 1.30 lengths adrift of the winner.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bruce Brown: “I was a bit worried when they switched to the Cushion Track. He had the best form in the race so I thought it was just a question of whether he would handle the track or not. I thought he would win if he did. He won last time he raced at the Sunshine Coast and had two runs in town after that.
"The first one was a fair run. In the second he was interfered with right at the start and never recovered. So his overall form was far better than his last run and it was also far better than the rest of them here. It was fair prize-money too, which, when you own a quarter share in the horse, helps to make it a good day’s work."
Jockey Andrew Spinks: “I’ve been on him his last four runs for two wins. The problem with his last run was that he missed the kick and he got too far back. He never really had a chance coming from that far back there.
"Today was a lovely run throughout. He travelled really well, straight onto the bridle. I don’t think that the jockey next to me could hold up their horse and it took off so I followed them and we got a great run into the race and he finished off well.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Youcantseeme): 2.80 out to 3.30. Favourite (Al Fawzi): 2.70 out to 2.80. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Youcantseeme, which was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
Spink's second win came in the last race on the card.
Class 1 Handicap - 1100m. Time: 1-08.07. Track - Cushion Track. 1 Crystal Rocket; 2 Secret Habit; 3 Muddy Millie.
Andrew Spinks picked up his second winner of the day when the Tina Cotslopoulos trained Crystal Rocket finished strongest of all on the outside to claim the second victory of her career.
The five-year-old mare sat just off the speed for the majority of the race before reeling in the leaders with a well-judged run in the home straight. While Crystal Rocket won by 1.80 lengths, the contest for the minor places was particularly keen as only a length separated the other seven runners as they crossed the line. WINNER FEEDBACK: Jockey Andrew Spinks: “We began well. The plan was to ride her quiet in behind the leaders. She travelled and we got a good run through. This was my first win on her.
"I've had a couple rides on her before for a couple of placings. She's been running over 1000m and I felt as though she would be looking for 1200m today, then they transferred the meeting to the Cushion Track and put the distance back to 1100m. I was still confident that if I could ride her quiet she would be right in there with a chance.” PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Crystal Rocket): 5.50 out to 6.00. Equal Favourite (Secret Habit): 3.50 out to 3.80. Finished second. Equal Favourite (Ninth Duke): 3.50 out to 4.00 into 3.80. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Thunderbeast (P. Wolfgram) was slow to begin. Crystal Rocket (A. Spinks) was tightened for room on jumping away between Ninth Duke (J. Kropp), which was taken out by Zacs Equal (T. Chambers), and Secret Habit (J. Bates), which was taken in by Muddy Millie (M. Hellyer). Secret Habit raced wide for the majority of the event.
