MY SHOUT - WOORIM RACES INTO STRADBROKE CONTENTION

By David Fowler | Tuesday, May 24, 2011

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB, taking the position upon Wayne Wilson's retirement last August. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Oh what a difference a week makes!

Here we were seven days ago labelling Hay List in the AAMI Stradbroke … .if he runs mind you … and I have no reason to run away from that statement.

The pendulum seems to be swinging more in the favour of a Stradbroke start, but that's a topic for after this week's 10,000.

But if Woorim's BRC Sprint performance didn't put the shiver up your spine from a Stradbroke point of view, well you've got ice running through your veins!

I spotted him in the call near last and then actually left him out of the broadcast at the vital stage when you have to make a judgement of who to put in and who to leave out. Thought he couldn't make up that amount of ground within 200m.

Foolishly I left him out and the rest is history.

Did you see that finishing burst?

And now with the one kilogram penalty, positioned 23rd in order of entry with 52kg, he is virtually assured of a start and isn't the race tailor-made with a genuine tempo assisting his dynamic finish.

Just a small aside, but it's worth pointing out that in his two Eagle Farm 1400m wins to date, he has always run time.

I've often considered it a reasonable benchmark for a horse if he can run time and there's a 1:22.02 and a 1:21.95 already on the CV.

I'm thinking of saving on him at $9 bucks because I doubt he will get any longer.

By the way, hope you snapped up the $15 about Beaded we were discussing last week. Win, lose or draw, it was good odds and she is now half that at $7.50.

Speaking of Beaded, she lines up against Hay List in the 10,000 this Saturday.

When Black Caviar went by the way last Thursday, Tattsbet slammed Hay List into $1.67 with Beaded at $6.

Seems awfully short but we've been saying he is a champion in his own right so at WFA he should be winning. The totes or the corporates aren't there to give the money away I suppose.

Have to give Scenic Shot a mention.

I remember marvelling at the then six-year-old two years ago when he captured the Doomben Cup, O'Shea, Brisbane Cup treble. His will to win was what struck me most.

Might I ask how will they beat him in the Brisbane Cup?

Wet or dry is not a problem and under this year's conditions, he can't be allotted
any more than 60kg which is what he carried in 2009.

This grand stayer is starting to take on Rough Habit proportions with his love affair with Queensland racing.

No surprises for nominating Scarlett Lady as clearly the best Queensland Oaks trial in the Roses.

She has now been elevated to $3.30 favorite for the fillies' feature and deservedly so after her power-packed finish.

Most also spotted the other good run from Heidilicious who made a meal of the start and gave away a big leeway before running on generously.

Being a Zabeel, one would think the 2400m would be ideal.

The other thing to like about these two fillies they are coming into this campaign fresh rather than having gut-busters during the autumn.

I still maintain Fillydelphia is Queensland's best chance of a Group One victory, but those two fillies really impressed on the weekend.

The Derby is still a puzzling picture for me.

Shootoff did his Derby prospects no harm with his solid Doomben Cup run and deserves his $5 ranking in the blue riband.

Is there much depth to this year's race? Could Scarlett Lady if she won the Oaks try for the double?

Saturday's Grand Prix result might give us some more ammo to fire.

I'll be watching a horse called Alma’s Fury ($26 in the Derby) in the Grand Prix. I though his Rough Habit run was good after being set a task.

Until next week.
