JONES IN LINE FOR AN HISTORIC THREE-PEAT

Angela Jones has the chance to create history yet again when she rides Esjay in the $200 000 Listed Weetwood, which will be contested over the 1200m trip at Toowoomba on Saturday.

Jones, who wrote her name indelibly in the record books by becoming the first woman to win the Brisbane Jockey’s premiership, won back-to-back Weetwoods over the last two seasons, saluting on the Tony Gollan trained Hidden Wealth in 2024 and aboard the Mark Currie trained Tavs in 2025.

Should she guide the Esjay to victory on Saturday, she would be the first jockey to complete a race-to-race hat trick of wins in the Weetwood since 1971 (that’s as far back as records could be traced).

With those two successive wins, Jone’s name currently sits alongside the late Stathi Katsidis in the record books.

Katsidis rode back-to-back Weetwood winners on two occasions … in 2000 and 2001 and in 2004 and 2005, and he etched his name deep into the history of the race by winning the Weetwood five times in total with three of those victories being supplied by local trainer Kevin Kemp in the form of Startell (in 2001) and a Tellum double in (2005 and 2007).

Kemp, who also won the Weetwood with Typhoon Red in 2014, does not have a runner in this year’s edition of the Weetwood, but he has fired up two runners to start in the Toowoomba Cup one race later.

You have to go all the way back to January 3 at Doomben to find the last, and only other time, Jones has ridden Esjay. Notably, the pair came back a winner that day.

Ben Thompson is the only other jockey in Saturday’s Weetwood lineup to have a win behind his name in the race, having saluted aboard All That Pizzazz for Tony Gollan in 2023.

Esjay is currently a $14 chance while Thompson’s mount Blazing Harry has been marked up at $10.
