BOSUN IS THE CLEAR FAVOURITE IN THE WESTSPEED PLATINUM SPRING SERIES FINAL

By Graham Potter | Thursday, June 25, 2026

The Mitchell Pateman trained Bosun is the clear favourite for the featured $100 000 Westspeed Platinum Spring Series Final, which will be contested over 1600m at Belmont on Saturday.

The very lightly raced six-year-old son of The Gingerbreadman, who only had his first taste of race action in his five-year-old season, comes into the race looking for a fourth successive win after claiming his Maiden win over 1300m at Northam by a clearcut 2.37 length margin on June 18 … before building up an eye-catching winning sequence with further wins in Heat 1 of the Westspeed Platinum Series (also over 1300m) on August 15 and Heat 3 of the same series on September 12 (this time over 1400m).

Both of those Westspeed Platinum Series Heat Series wins came at Belmont, where Bosun will be looking to take out the series final at a track in which he is unbeaten in two starts.

He will have to handle the 1600m trip for the first time if he is claim victory, but his last start 1400m win suggests that should not be a problem.

In that race Patrick Carbery, who has been in the saddle in all seven of Bosun’s career starts and who obviously knows the horse very well … dropped Bosun out from his extreme outside draw (barrier fourteen out of fourteen) and raced in last place for the first half of the race.

That meant that Bosun started his winning run from all of nine to ten lengths off the leader … swung all of eight wide on the turn … and powered home from there to overcome the very game effort of Swift Talker, who had had hit the front with meaning approaching the 200m mark looking the likely winner, before Bosun accelerated past Swift Talker and raced away, hitting the line in dominant fashion to claim victory by 1.18 lengths.

So, there can be no fears for the 1600m trip.

On the back of that, Bosun has been marked up as a $2.15 favourite.

Only two other runners in the twelve strong field are quoted at odds under $14 … the self-same Swift Talker ($4.20), who gave Bosun plenty of cheek last time when earning that runner-up finish, and I Love Ya Money ($5) … Bosun’s stable companion … who was beaten into fifth place behind Bosun and Swift Talker in that same race, coming home four lengths behind the winner after leading the field for a long way before being run out of it approaching the 200m mark.

Carbery stays on Bosun. Chris Parnham will again ride Swift Talker for Simon Miller, and Willie Pike will again partner I Love Ya Money.
