ST LAWRENCE SALUTES IN THE MURRAY BRDGE GOLD CUP - BUT ONLY BY A NARROW,, FAST DIMINSHING MARGIN

The Gavin Bedggood trained St Lawrence brought his Flemington form to Murray Bridge and that proved good enough to see him salute as the $3.50 favourite in the $150 000 Murray Bridge Gold Cup, although the eight-year-old son of Redwood had to work for his tenth career victory, only just hanging on to win by 0.14 lengths from the faster finishing $18 chance Sir Kingsford, who came again after leading from the start until the 300m mark, who would have reversed the result in another couple of strides.

St Lawrence, who had won over 1700m at Flemington in his previous start, came back to the 1600m trip, gave away a 3kg advantage at the weights and a four length start to Sir Kingsford, but, when the latter moved to the centre of track on straightening, Callow kept St Lawrence on a rail-hugging path and the Bedggood trained runner quickly made inroads into Sir Kingsford’s lead, to the extent that St Lawrence took over the running approaching the 300m mark … and moved a couple of length clear.

At that stage St Lawrence looked every inch the winner and you might have expected Sir Kingsford to weaken but, instead, he only got stronger and produced a storming finish which would have given the followers of St Lawrence a real scare.

Another outsider, the $21 chance Bamyan Budda filled third place 2.51 lengths behind the winner while the $5.50 second favourite Cicala, who went back after jumping from a very wide barrier (number 14), never got into the race and ended up well beaten out of the placings.

St Lawrence’s ten wins have come in thirty-seven starts, from which he has banked no less than $1 215 072 in prize-money.
