IS ABERDEEN FLYER READY TO FIND THAT ELUSIVE WINNING EDGE?
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, November 4, 2026
The Sean and Jake Casey trained Aberdeen Flyer might only have one win to his name in eleven starts, but the son of Astern is nevertheless a $1.75 favourite for the Listed Luckygray Stakes over 1800m at Ascot on Saturday.
A deeper dive into the four-year-old’s form reveals several positives and one possible point of concern.
The Casey trained runner has a win over 1800m at Ascot to his credit (in the J C Roberts Stakes) … in his only start over the 1800m trip. He then finished second to Sentimental Legend (the horse he had beaten in the J C Roberts Stakes) in the Listed Melvista over 2200m and then the Casey’s were brave enough to set Aberdeen Flyer a Group 2 assignment in the WATC Derby.
He did finish unplaced there, but the stable’s throw at the stumps arguably suggested that they did think a bit of the horse.
Aberdeen Flyer has raced twice since resuming after a seven month layoff and has finished second (as the beaten favourite) on both occasions … in the RTG78+Handicap and the Listed Northam Cup over 1600m.
Those runs represented a well measured build up in distance leading into the 1800m of the Luckygray Stakes.
As promising as those efforts were, those results did add to the point of concern which is that Aberdeen Flyer has finished second in four of his last six starts. That’s better than third, but it still shows a lack of a winning edge, a trait Aberdeen Flyer will need to turn around if he is to put in a performance that will justify his restrictive odds on the betting boards.
The stable companion Memory Parade is one of the rivals he will have to overcome. To do that Aberdeen Flyer will have to reverse the result of Northam Cup as Memory Parade was victorious that day at long odds of $16, beating Aberdeen Flyer, the $2.15 favourite, by 1.68 lengths at level weights.
They meet again on the same weight terms.
Memory Parade finished second in the Lucky Gray Stakes last year and on the Northam Cup effort he clearly has a chance to go one better here. He is currently a $6 chance.
Contenders away from the Sean and Luke Casey stable include Ginger Baker (who finished third in the Idyllic Prince), Royal Toronado (the Pinjarra Cup winner), Oly’s Choice (who finished third in the Northam Cup) and All Grunt (a last start winner).
