SCST OCT 02 - BLOOMIN TIPSY GIVES CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Sunshine Coast, October 2, 2011.
Track - Good 3: Rail - out 6m.
Maiden Plate (Set Weights) - 1400m.
1 Bloomin Tipsy; 2 Kar Ma Te; 3 Mighty Mountain; 4 Mystic Mahal.
Time: 1-25.48. Last 600m: 37.02.

The four-year-old gelding Bloomin’ Tipsy gave his connections cause for celebration when he cemented his comeback after illness with his first career win at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

After having only two starts back in January, Bloomin’ Tipsy suffered a setback which took him away from race action for six months.

He returned with a solid enough third placing in August. Two more runs brought him right up to match fitness and he showed the benefit of that by powering home when it mattered most to claim the honours.

All credit to the winner, but the race also produced another runner for the notebook.

Kar Ma Te never settled in the race. It was reported (see Stewards Report) that he over-raced early. It was not a pretty picture as the gelding and jockey Ashley Mundy had their own running battle for most of the race, with the horse’s progress being punctuated by a stop start routine which clearly impacted on his chance of launching a challenge from a position of strength.

The home straight was no better with the horse continuing to take a buffeting when placed in a hopeless position.

That Kar Ma Te still had the fortitude to chase home into second place after he eventually (and much too late) found clear running, means he will deserve every attention next time out.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Green: “He got pretty sick earlier in the year. He swallowed a bit of rubber out on the track and we thought we’d lost him.

“His recovery didn’t involve any operations or anything like that. It was just time. He was out for five months.

“He went to Craiglea Stud and they looked after him.

“It’s taken a long while for him to come back, but we think we’ve got him back now.

“He is a good galloper. He did put the writing on the wall last start (when he finished second, two lengths behind Jade’s Dilemma over the same track and distance on September 18).

‘He did that with some confidence today. That’s the way he runs. He takes a good sit and comes home strong.”

Jockey Geoffrey Goold: “Yeah I rode the horse in his last two starts.

“In his last start I thought he was going to go close to winning. I actually thought I did have them beat at the furlong, but the other horse … another Oratorio horse (Jade’s Dilemma) … finished very good over the top of him.

“I felt confident coming into today.

“He is the sort of horse who begins well, but doesn’t muster a lot of speed and he gets himself in awkward positions. Once again I sort of got stuck a little bit wide on him, but it is a nice, roomy track and I managed to find a little bit of cover for him.

“I was pretty confident on straightening. I just thought … be patient. Don’t press the button too early.

“He was full of running and he hit the line beautifully when I asked him to go.

“I think he’ll probably get a mile this prep. I think next prep he is going to be a nice horse up to 2000m, when he strengthens up a bit more.

“He is a big horse, but he is still a bit narrow. This was also only his sixth start, so he’s got a lot of scope for improvement I think.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Bloomin Tipsy): 6.00 out to 8.00.
Favourite (Mystic Mahal): 1.90 out t0 2.00. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Danzi Pearl (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

Kar Ma Te (A. Mundy) began awkwardly.

Near the 1200m Kar Ma Te, which commenced to over-race, was steadied when it improved up on to the heels of Bom Chicka Wah Wah (A. Pattillo).

Tigerlicious (O. Turpin) brushed the running rail leaving the 1200m and again leaving the 900m.

Bloomin Tipsy (G. Goold) raced wide throughout.

Near the 900m Kar Ma Te continued to over-race, shifted out at that point and made contact with Bloomin Tipsy.

Rounding the home turn Mystic Mahal (P. Schmidt) shifted out and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of Tigerlicious, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. In this incident Tigerlicious shifted out and made contact with Mighty Mountain (J. Stanley).

Leaving the 300m Kar Ma Te attempted to force a run between Mighty Mountain and Bom Chicka Wah Wah where in the opinion of the stewards there was doubtful room and as a result made heavy contact with Bom Chicka Wah Wah, causing that runner to become unbalanced. A. Mundy, the rider of Kar Ma Te, was severely reprimanded and advised that in future she ensures there is sufficient racing room when attempting to take a run.
