It has been a little while coming, but when Only One Annie’s first career victory arrived it did so in telling form.

The daughter of Grandera shot right away from her rivals. She established a sizable advantage in the sweep to the turn and by the time the field straightened for home the race was clearly already firmly within her grasp.

Jockey Jason Taylor did venture a backward glance early in the straight but there was no danger in sight and Only One Annie’s resolute gallop to the line ensured that the race would never translate into a serious contest.

Only One Annie is owned by G J Bourke, W F Smith, B J O’sullivan, B C O’sullivan, Mrs K A O’sullivan, Mrs K V O’sullivan, Mrs E J O’sullivan & J O’sullivan.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “She led and just got run down last time (by Ruthless Babe). That was her first time at 2200.

“Jason (Taylor) was going out … he planned to lead, but he said that with a little bit of pace in it he might have been box-seating. When they left her alone and then the other thing took her on I think he just kept on letting her slide a bit … and then when he gave her a bit of a shake-up on the turn it was all over. It was good.”

Jockey Jason Taylor: “I rode her a few starts back over 1800. It was her first start over 1800 so I rode her a bit conservative and she didn’t have a lot of sprint.

“So we thought, we’d better take up the lead and let her roll along. She just missed out last time (over 2225m). Today we led. I revved her up a bit on approaching the home straight. She doesn’t have a quick turn of foot but she can sustain a run.

“No, I didn’t realize how far in front I was. I actually took a little peak over my shoulder early in the straight and I thought, geez, I didn't think I was going that hard. Too easy.”

PRICE FLUCTAUTIONS:
Winner (Only One Annie): 2.20 out to 2.60.
Favourite (Knights): 2.40 out to 2.50. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Knights (R. Myers) was slow to begin.

Stewards questioned C .Pye regarding the tactics adopted on Hear The Beat, in particular her reasons for losing ground away from the leader between the 1000m and 600m when it appeared her mount was full of running.

Miss Pye explained that she had been instructed to take up a position with cover behind the lead, however when unable to obtain this position, she allowed Hear The Beat to stride forward to a position outside the lead leaving the 1500m and the mare over-raced from that point until the 1000m, at which stage she was able to obtain a position with cover behind the lead.

She added from that point Hear The Beat commenced to settle, and she was of the opinion that the leader was setting a fast tempo, she was therefore content to allow a small gap to form between herself and the leader, however when she pressured Hear The Beat near the 700m in an attempt to make up ground the mare did not quicken as anticipated however ran on fairly over the concluding stages.

Stewards advised jockey Pye that they accepted her explanation in that Hear The Beat proved difficult to ride in the early stages, however she may have been better served attempting to remain in a position closer to Only One Annie leaving the 800m, however given the failure of Hear The Beat to improve when pressured approaching the 600m, noted her explanation.
