DOOM OCT 10 - WONDERFUL JESTER GETS OFF THE MARK

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Doomben, October 10, 2012.
Track - Good 3; Rail - Out 8m.
QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate (set weights) - 1650m.
1 Wonderful Jester; 2 Mobster; 3 Heater; 4 Phoenix Force
Time: 1-41.77. Last 600: 34.71.
Margins: 1.80; 1.80.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Brett Killion (Foreman for the John Thompson stable): “While a couple of runs have been disappointing on paper there’s been excuses, so I know he’s got his critics …and they’ve probably got a few fair points, but we knew he had a win in him.

“It was a good field for him to do it in today. Michael (Cahill) is confident he will stay 2000 … 2200.

“He showed a nice turn of foot today so there are probably more wins in him.”

Jockey Michael Cahill: “They went slow, didn’t they?

“I like my horse. I think he is a promising young stayer. The question at this stage is whether he’ll run a mile-and-a-quarter plus. I think he will. He has just got to learn to settle a bit better.

“I had to give him a few smacks to get him into his rhythm. He put paid to them pretty quickly in the straight.

“You’d like to think he is a Saturday class horse. He hasn’t has a lot of luck which is the reason why he was still a Maiden going into today, but he was placed in a couple of two-year-old races last season on a Saturday.

“We hoped that he was probably a lot better than those horses he was running against today and that proved to be the case.

“He just hasn’t got the best of attitudes at the moment, but I think that is just a bit of immaturity”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Svetski (G. Colless), Heater (C. Munce) and Fort Constantine (G. Goold) were slow to begin.

Desert Ruler (B. Stewart) over-raced in the middle stages and near the 800m shifted out abruptly, forcing Kristrom (J. Taylor) wider on the track. A short distance later Desert Ruler shifted back to the rail, which resulted in Cracow (J. Lloyd) having to be steadied to avoid that runner's heels.

J. Lloyd (Cracow) reported that after being held up approaching and rounding the home turn, near the 300m he was unable to improve into a run between Kristrom and Svetski as Cracow was inclined to hang in and proved difficult to ride.

After passing the 400m Heater shifted out and made contact with Wonderful Jester (M. Cahill). Heater then became awkward at the heels of Patent Pending (T. Harrison) and had to shift to the inside of that runner in order to improve.

M. Cahill, the rider of Wonderful Jester, was fined $200 for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

Stable representative Mr B. Killion was questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on Cracow, which was restrained at the start and ridden towards the rear of the field, which is in contrast to its established racing pattern.

Mr Killion explained that from the wide barrier he was of the view that Cracow did not possess the necessary speed to take up a handy position and for this reason he instructed rider J. Lloyd to ease at the start and attempt to obtain cover. Mr Killion was reminded of his obligations to inform stewards of any variance in tactics.
