DOOM OCT 10 - SPOT THE ROCK JUSTIFIES SHORT ODDS
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Doomben, October 10, 2012. Track - Good 3; Rail - Out 8m. Class 3 Handicap - 1110m. 1 Spot The Rock; 2 Feltham; 3 Embraer; 4 Tonzaticka. Time: 1-24.08. Last 600: 34.08. Margins: 1.50; 0.10.
WINNER FEEDBACK: John Fleming (spokesman for the Tony Gollan stable): “The horse has been in the stable six or seven weeks, maybe a little bit longer.
“He’s had two jump-outs leading up to this. He won both of them, so that why he was priced up that short. People don’t miss much these days.
“As far as the run itself is concerned, we thought he might have had a bit more speed, but Rosie (Myers) did the right thing. She box-seated on him.
“You only have to look at his condition and his coat today and he’ll definitely take a lot of improvement out of that.
“It was just a good stepping stone for him.”
Jockey Rosie Myers: “No, I didn’t ride the horse in his jump-outs.
“He drew the one. I was able to take a sit in behind them.
“He was quite good. He sort of took a look around him the last bit, but obviously he was just too good … and, for sure, he’s going to take improvement out of that.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Stewards accepted the explanations tendered by trainers G. Burns and H. Wilson for the late scratching at 7.45 a.m. of Brampton and Signpost respectively.
As R. McMahon was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of Embraer. R. McMahon was fined $200.
Why So Expensive (C. Munce) was difficult to load and when attempting to be loaded riderless broke away from the barrier attendant and galloped for some distance. Why So Expensive was subsequently a late scratching on veterinary advice at 3.25 p.m. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that Why So Expensive must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to it being permitted to race again.
Following the running of the race, correct weight was delayed to enable stewards to view the stewards' footage of the start of the race to ascertain whether Fist Of Fury (G. Goold) had been afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from rider, apprentice G. Goold, official starter J. Roberts and assistant starter Mr P. Cousins, it was established that Fist Of Fury had its head in an adjoining stall when the start was effected and in the opinion of the stewards was denied a fair start and was subsequently declared a non-runner.
Near the 700m Spot The Rock (R. Myers) shifted out and became unbalanced.
