DOOM OCT 27 - MORNING CAPTAIN ADDS ANOTHER STRING TO HIS BOW

By Graham Potter | Saturday, October 27, 2012

Doomben, October 27, 2012.
Track - Good 3; Rail - out 8m.
Open Handicap - 1200m.
1 Morning Captain; 2 Funtantes; 3 Theft; 4 Boys On Tour.
Time: 1-09.22; Last 600: 33.74.
Margins: 0.50; 3.00.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Garry Doughty (spokesman for the Kelly Doughty stable): “Good win. Look, we’ve sort of been wanting to get him to settle a little bit and ride him so he is not so one dimensional.

“If he is going to go to the next grade he has got to have another string to his bow. Today he got back to fifth and really hit the line good.

“At the furlong he still had work to do but I thought he could get up then, because he loves a fight. As soon the rider got busy I knew my horse would keep coming. The more you do on him, the more he gives.

“He hasn’t being doing badly. He’s drawn bad barriers. He drew seven out of seven again today and it’s always been a case of him either going to be four deep or we’d had to give him a squeeze and go forward. He’s been in a race that were winnable so we’ve sort of gone forward on him.

“Today, I thought we might have to cost him the race to teach him to race how we wanted him to run. That was the risk. He doesn’t pull, but he has a very light mouth and he can flick his head easily so, as I say, there was a risk, but things turned out well.”

Jockey Ric McMahon: “He has always shown good ability. He’s two runs this time in have been really good. I did chase the ride and I was very happy to be on my bloke today.

“Garry (Doughty) did say that he wanted to add another string to this horse’s bow so we wanted to try to get him to settle.

“There looked to be good speed. To be honest we probably settled a pair further back than I wanted to be. I wanted to slot in where Noel Doyle’s horse was … Celtic Dancer … but we ended up in an alright spot and we got a good run up the fence so it worked out alright.

“Funtuntes, to her credit, did sprint very good in the straight and she had me beat at the 150m. Actually she had me beat most of the way down the running. My bloke had to knuckle down and, to his credit, he dug in well and was good enough to get the result.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Morning Captain): 5.00 out to 5.50.
Favourite (Funtantes): 1.80 out to 2.15. Finished second.
