DOOM OCT 27 - GENERAL EXIBITION UNDERLINES HIS POTENTIAL WITH STRONG CITY VICTORY
By Graham Potter | Saturday, October 27, 2012
Doomben, October 27, 2012. Track - Good 3; Rail - out 8m. QTIS Three-year-old Handicap - 1200m. 1 General Exhibition; 2 Qfighter; 3 Substation; 4 The Storeman. Time: 1-09.96. Last 600: 34.08. Margins: 0.80; 4.00.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Helen Page: “Oh, he’s fabulous isn’t he?
“I’ve only had one other General Nediym in my stable. That was Doonan. We won the Golden Rose with him in Sydney … a million dollar race.
“This horse … I’ve thrown him in at the deep end to see if I can get enough prize-money … to see if he measured up to start with … for Magic Millions day. He is a Magic Millions horse. So let’s hope he can make it.
“I asked Tegan (Harrison), because of his pull at the weight and the difficult barrier, to go forward and to just be careful not to be caught deep.
“As it turned out there was a lot of speed inside him and he didn’t have the speed to clear them, so he she had him running about fourth … in a good spot. She rode him well.
“He took a big step today … but getting into the Magic Millions is all about prize-money, you know. Our prize-money is still dicey here. My aim is that day, so I‘ll plan it from here”.
Jockey Tegan Harrison: “He was very impressive. That was a very good win because obviously he is still doing a few things wrong.
“There is so much improvement there … there’ll be better wins to come yet!
“If I had the whip in the right hand he would have won by a lot further (See Stewards Report Extract).
“He has nice gate speed, but not enough to possie up somewhere good. I think over a bit further he should get over to the fence somewhere … and down the straight he’ll be a lot better for it.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (General Exhibit): 5.50 steady. Favourite (Qfighter): 3.30 out to 3.50. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: The start of this race was delayed to enable the veterinary surgeon to inspect The Storeman, which dislodged its rider during the preliminary. The Storeman was subsequently passed suitable to race. The Storeman also had to be resaddled.
On jumping away, the nearside stirrup leather on Dansal became detached from the buckle, resulting in jockey G. Cooksley losing the use of that stirrup iron, causing Dansal to be subsequently eased out of the race. Following the race, stewards examined the relevant gear and found it to be in a satisfactory condition.
Gwennie (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, bumping General Exhibit (T. Harrison).
Near the 600m, Finnigan's Folly (L. Cassidy) became awkwardly placed at the heels of Allknight Saint (B. Stewart), which shifted out, making contact with Charge A Fortune (E. Wilkinson). Gibberer (M. Cahill), which was following, was steadied as a consequence.
Rounding the home turn, Gibberer was held up at the heels of Finnigan's Folly for a short distance.
T. Harrision reported that General Exhibit laid in under pressure in the straight, placing her at a disadvantage in fully testing her mount.
A post race veterinary examination of Charge A Fortune, which compounded to finish a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Connections advised that they would consider gelding the horse.
