IPSW OCT 26 - SOFT ANGEL GLIDES IN

By Graham Potter | Friday, October 26, 2012

Ipswich, October 26, 2012.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True.
Maiden Handicap (Fillies & Mares) - 1350m.
1 Soft Angel; 2 Sandpiper Bay; 3 Urbane; 4 Town Dazzler.
Time: 1-10.98. Last 600: 35.77.
Margins: 3.30, 0.10.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Jeffrey Caught: “No, I wasn’t worried at all about the start (where the horse was tardy away). That’s how I wanted her to ride it. I wanted to ride it quiet.

“Just learning from her first few runs we found that when she is ridden up on the speed she just doesn’t finish her races off. The other day when she came second she hit the front too early.

“We wanted her quiet today, so that she could have the last crack at them.

“There was plenty of speed in the race so we didn’t have to worry about being able to ride her the way we wanted to.

“Rosie (Myers) did a good job. She’s ridden her a few times now. It’s just taken a bit to sort the horse out.

“I think she is just a horse that needs to settle back and hit the line and I think she will get over a bit of ground.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Oh What A Deal (C. Eaton) and Almasea (D. Robinson) were slow to begin.

Soft Angel (R. Myers) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Sandpiper Bay (D. Griffin).

Leaving the 200m, Oh What A Deal was disappointed for a run between Town Dazzler (M. Cahill) and Star Of Tess (G. Colless), which shifted out slightly.

Approaching the winning post, Almasea, which was inclined to hang in, had to be steadied away from the heels of Sandpiper Bay, which shifted out.

Stewards questioned trainer J. Caught regarding the tactics adopted on Soft Angel.

Mr Caught stated that his intentions were to have the mare race in a midfield position, however may have got further back than anticipated. He added that it is his intention that the mare be ridden accordingly for future starts.

Whilst stewards noted Mr Caught's explanation, he was nevertheless advised that should riding tactics differ from the horse's previous racing pattern, he should advise stewards of any variations to tactics.
