IPSW NOV 23 - UTMOST FAITH REPAYS STABLE CONFIDENCE WITH A GUTSY VICTORY

By Graham Potter | Friday, November 23, 2012

Ipswich, November 23, 2012.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 6m.
Class 2 Handicap - 1690m.
1 Utmost Faith; 2 Skate On By; 3 Cubic Inches; 4 Pack The Bags.
Time: 1-43.86. Last 600: 35.69.
Margins: 0.50; 0.80.

WINNER FEEDBACK
Trainer Darren Bell: “I left it up to Larry (Cassidy) … what he was going to do from the wide barrier.

“The only thing with the horse is that he is pretty one-paced. If he is not on the speed then you have probably have to make sure that he is the first one going forward … so that he can get into the race.

“He does show courage in the finish. He just keeps coming so we’ll try him over further now.

“He has actually surprised a little bit. When Joe Bowditch won his maiden on him here back in January, he sort of indicated to me that might be his last win … you know he didn’t think he would go much further, but he won another race that prep. We put him out and he has come back and he has improved some more.

“No I haven’t sent Joe a text yet.

“Incredibly, the horse was sold for $870 000 as a yearling. The bloke who has got him with me now paid $800.00 for him.

"I’m not certain where he got him … I think it must have been one of those tried sales … but he got it for $800.00. At least someone’s making something out of him.

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “I wasn’t sure where we were going to end up in the race when I looked at the form. I really didn’t know where I was going to get from that draw so I thought it might get a bit difficult.

“As it was they sort of rolled along the first bit and I just came back behind them and got the fence.

“When I got there they slowed up … and then I didn’t want to be there because they said, you’ve got to get him going. He is a bit one-paced.

“I was sort of locked away and they were going slow and I was able to edge my way out and get between them. Then I got to the outside and he started to put in and he just kept digging deep.

“The first part after the 600 would have been pretty fast. We really put to on from the 600 to the turn and then it was just a slog the rest of the way, but he was never going to give up. He really tries hard.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Binrasy (R. Jamieson) blundered on jumping away. Cubic Inches (S. Galloway) was slow to begin. Utmost Faith (L. Cassidy) began awkwardly and shifted in making contact with Excellent Dane (M. Hellyer).

More Dust (J. Byrne) over-raced in the early stages.

Approaching the 1300m Sharma (M. Cahill) shifted in, making contact with the running rail, becoming unbalanced and very awkward in its action for a short distance. Sharma then over-raced for some distance thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination of Sharma revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the off-fore cannon.

Supa Mega Deadly (R. McMahon) over-raced in the early and middle stages and near the 1400m had to be steadied from the heels of Pack The Bags (P. Hammersley) for some distance.

Leaving the 900m Supa Mega Deadly again improved on to the heels of Pack The Bags and had to be steadied.

Apprentice R. Jamieson (Binrasy) dropped her whip near the 400m.

Rider M. Hellyer reported to stewards following the event that Excellent Dane hung throughout the event and raced wide and as a result of its racing manners he was unable to place the horse under any pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Excellent Dane revealed no significant findings. Trainer L. Treloar's stable representative, Ms Lambert, was advised that Excellent Dane must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before being permitted to race again.

Binrasy lost its off-fore plate in running.

*Utmost Faith (Encosta de Lago - Sea Of Faith - by Danehill) is owned by J E Jarvis and C G Jarvis.

The three-time winner is trained by Darren Bell.

Originally an $870 000 purchase at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, Utmost Faith had nine starts for three trainers in four preparations without success before transferring to the Bell stable for whom he has now won on three occasions in ten outings, having shown a particular liking for the Ipswich track where he has now saluted in three out of six starts.
