IPSW NOV 16 - RED HOT DAZZLER UNDERLINES HIS POTENTIAL WITH SECOND START WIN

By Graham Potter | Friday, November 16, 2012

Ipswich Nov 16, 2012.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m.
QTIS Three-year-old Maiden Plate - 1200m.
1 Red Hot Dazzler; 2 Cornered; 3 General Kingsman; 4 Niho Hulihan.
Time: 1-11.91. Last 600: 35.20.
Margins: 1.00; 0.20.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Darren Bell: “He is a difficult horse to judge on his work. He is very on and off in his work and if you saw him work on Monday you probably wouldn’t have been backing him today.

“Having said that, his first-up run was impressive and he got the job done today, so he does put it together on race-days and that’s most important.

“If you looked at him in the enclosure today he still looked very soft, so there is still a lot of improvement in him.

‘He has got the attitude and the action to suggest that he will stretch out to a mile and being by Red Dazzler will help him with the extra ground.

“I’m still not certain what I will do next with him. I’ll just see how he comes through this.

“To me he still hasn’t switched on.

“We’ll probably go another run … just sort of the next step up or take on a Saturday three-year-old. I’ll discuss those options with the owners.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The following change of tactics were notified to stewards by the respective connections. Nothing To Burn would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit, and that Stamp Of Authority, which positioned forward last start, would be ridden with cover today. Nothing To Burn was ridden accordingly, and Stamp Of Authority settled midfield without cover, however after being caught wide, improved its position from the 600m.

Mr Dodo, which proved difficult to pull up in the preliminary, underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers and was cleared to start.

Leaving the 900m, Mr Dodo (L. Cassidy), when over-racing, had to be steadied from the heels of Red Hot Dazzler (R. McMahon), which shifted in.

Mr Dodo continued to over-race for some distance following this and when being restrained, Gianova (R. Goltz) improved on to that horse's heels and was obliged to shift wider on the track and raced wide from that point onwards.

Near the 800m, Kentaur (M. Palmer) over-raced at the heels of Spinning Heart (J. Taylor) and lost ground when having to be steadied.

Both Kentaur and Spinning Heart were inclined to hang out in the middle stages.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey Michael Palmer regarding the tactics employed on Cornered, which raced in a more forward position today as compared to previous starts.

Jockey Palmer advised he was not given specific instructions on how to ride the gelding in the race. He added that he did not believe there was a lot of speed drawn inside him and after beginning well, rode forward in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover just behind the leaders.

Jockey Palmer added that after doing this he was unable to clear runners to his inside and would have been caught deep on the track, so he continued to ride forward on Cornered to gain a position closer to the fence.

Stewards noted the explanation.

*Red Hot Dazzler is owned C B Mcdonald, P E Dutton, P T Ryan & K W Mcdonald.

The lightly raced three-year-old is trained by Darren Bell.

The gelding was won at only the second time of asking at the restrictive odds of $1.70 after showing to good advantage with a spirited runner up finish behind Smakatus on debut.
