BRC JUL 18 - JAZZ HEART SWINGS IN
By Matthew Grimson | Monday, July 20, 2009
Eagle Farm, July 18. QTIS 3yo Handicap - 1600m. Time: 1-36.95 Track - Good 3. Rail - out 7m. 1 Jazz Heart; 2 Papal Joy; 3 Frozone.
The Bryan Guy trained Jazz Heart tackled a host of quality opposition during the Winter Carnival. In a succession of feature race outings, Jazz Heart had to give best to the likes of Chakvetadze, Court, Youthful Jack and Express Air, for the most part finding the task of a chasing against quality opposition from a rash of bad barrier draws too big a hurdle to overcome.
He was always clearly better than his finishing position in those run of results indicated and he showed true grit here in bouncing back under the steadying burden of top weight (when giving lumps of weight to all of his rivals) to secure the third win of his career.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bryan Guy: “I’ll bring him back to a Class 6 race and he’ll get in with about 53kg or 54kg on his back and we’ll just go through his grades now. I’ve got to remember too that, if I can give him another run or two and be able to probably give him a short break, he is eligible to run in the Magic Millions Cup and everything ... 1400m. He’s got enough prize-money to get in it, and he’ll get into with no weight on his back. So I’ll probably sit down with (owner) Stan (Leszczewicz) and talk about it. We might give him a break for a month and then set him for that, you know. I think that’s what we’ve got to do - to set him for the Magic Millions Cup.
“Shane (Scriven) stuck with him the whole time. The other day at the Sunshine Coast on the bog track he was on the inside and all his other runs he has drawn barriers seventeen, eighteen, fifteen ... and that’s given him no hope. And even today he drew eleven and sat three deep with 58kgs. His run was enormous.
“I thought he would win, we came here to the races very confident and we thought he’d win. We thought his run at the Sunshine Coast Guineas was good, so we’d thought he’d win. He’s a great horse to train. He’s a real gentleman. He is terrific, we’re really happy with him.”
Jockey Shane Scriven: “He deserved that more than anything. It’s probably a little bit down on class to what he had been racing. I’ve never ridden a horse that has been out of luck so many times. He just can’t draw an alley. Even today he had to do it a bit tough, but on his day he is not a bad animal. He lumped the 58kgs. He did it tough and he still got away with it - so it was a good effort.”
