GCST JAN 1 - ALL THAT STRIKES GOLD AT THE COAST

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, January 1, 2013

Gold Coast, January 1, 2013.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True.
Bat Out Of Hell Handicap (Quality) - 900m.
1st - All That; 2nd - Last Gift; 3rd - Azzaland; 4th - Jopa.
Time: 50.58. Last 600: 32.86.
Margins: 1.30; 0.10.

ALL THAT (6 b g King Of Danes - Smiles)
Owners: T Stevens, Mrs J Stevens & J Nottage
Trainer: T Stevens. Jockey: T Harrison.

WINNER FEEDBACK:

TRAINER TREVOR STEVENS:
“From the gate (All That drew eleven out of eleven) I wasn’t that hopeful.

“She scorched out. We had to try it that way and first-up he normally goes real good. (Apart from his debut run All That is now unbeaten in four goes first-up).

“It’s a massive win for me. Just unbelievable!”

JOCKEY TEGAN HARRISON:

“I’ve got to thank Michael Cahill for his advice prior to the race.

He being a senior jockey and with me riding in a race like this for the first time I said to him, look, my horse has got a lot of speed. I don’t know whether to ride him positive from a bad alley or just sneak him in behind a few.

“I did tell him as well that he has won over 800 and I was confident if he can get away well he will cross them, but there could be a chance I might get caught deep too.

“Michael said, in a race like that where it is a jump and run … he said you’d be mad not to try and be positive. So he just sort of helped me clear my mind prior to the race just talking about tactics.

“Obviously he is a really good rider so I took his advice on board.

“I went back and related that to the trainer. I’ve ridden a lot for them and he lets me have my way a bit. I knew he would be asking me what I thought, that’s why I wanted a second opinion from Michael.

“So, thanks to Michael. Thanks to Trevor (Stevens) for letting me do what I wanted to in the run. Trevor just gives you that confidence because he sends you out there without any real tie downs of what he wants you to do.

“Trevor did say to me he thought the horse had improved. This was his first run back this preparation.

“Generally, 800m … he will run it out really strong and fast. I’d never ridden him in a 900. I’d only ridden him in an 800 and over the 1000. Over the 1000 he generally is just finding it a bit tough the last 100m.

“So I was thinking that maybe the last bit he might just come back a bit, but today showed he runs the 900 out strong as well … and he has come back better they said, so he might just stretch to 1000 now as well.

“He is a real speedster though. He is bloody quick. I think if you look it up he holds the track record at Ipswich over 800m.

“Yeah, it was half emotional for me after all that has happened this week with Ashlee (Mundy).

“They actually say All That is a girl’s horse. It has never done any good for blokes. (Harrison has partnered All That in all of its last three wins, Priscilla Schmidt was in the saddle for its four previous successes and Cecily Eaton took the horse to its Maiden victory back in July 2010).

“So when I was going to the gates I did feel pretty privileged to be the only girl in the race. Given the sad circumstances of the week I did feel that I was out there riding for all of us and Ashlee of course … and I’m pretty thrilled and proud of myself with the way things worked out.

“I was definitely trying to do it for the girls.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:

Winner (All That): 17.00 out to 21.00
Favourite (Liesele): 3.00 in to 2.70 out to 3.00. Finished eighth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

The start of this race was delayed when the tongue tie on Lucky Luna (L. Cassidy) had to be replaced.

Beethog (P. Hammersley) was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run after the horse was found to have blood in its mouth.

Beethog was tightened for room shortly after the start between Last Gift (C. Munce) and Drenalin (J. Byrne), both of which shifted ground.

Near the 400m Drenalin was momentarily tightened for room between Carry To Fortune (G. Colless) and Last Gift, which shifted out.

Jopa (C. Whiteley) was held up rounding the home turn.

Drenalin and Carry To Fortune both raced wide throughout the event.

Trainer J. Lyons reported that Drenalin would now be retired after its disappointing effort today.

App T. Harrison the rider of All That was fined the sum of $200.00 for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.

A post race veterinary examination of Jopa revealed a laceration to the off-fore coronet.
